so i have a 75 and when i went to clean my carbs the other day one main nozzle where the needle slides into was put in different than what my manual shows

http://www.bikebandit.com/1975-yamaha-xs650-xs650b/o/m147241#sch215492

it shows that that the holes in the main should go into the float bowl body

side note i got a 76'-77' bs38 single throttle that had the mains the opposite way than what the manuals says also

First off, that's not a main or main nozzle of any sort, it's your needle jet. I don't know what manual you're looking at but the needle jet should go in with the longer portion w/ the air bleed holes down the side hanging out of the bottom of the carb, like so .....

The short end with the groove w/ o-ring should stick up into the carb.

ya i just realized what my main title says was wrong, the manual i am looking at is the clymer manual, ended up putting it in the way your are showing thanks
