Hello, sorry to make a new post, but I cannot find what i'm looking for.

I've been working on a '72 tx750 chopper project that I somehow obtained on a trade. I've been trying to figure out if I have any options for drum brake front wheels. I've searched around the internet, and even bought a wheel that is the incorrect axle diameter.

I've come up almost empty handed thus far, and am hoping that a Yam guru can help me out. I'm not opposed to even lacing something up or finding some different bearings to make it work, but I really want to ditch the disk on the front of this thing.

Here's a shot of it with the RD wheel, I used a motor mount bolt to mock it up.

See if you can find wheel bearings with the OD of the RD with the 17mm XS650 ID, make spacers, done. You would have to drill out the brake plate, no biggie

Here's a rather useful list of a BUNCH of oriental bikes sorted by front and rear axle sizes.

These are the bikes from the list with 17mm front wheel axles.

As far as I know, the front axle was always a 17mm O.D., XS1 drum and all the discs. The TX750 used the same front wheel as the 650 so it would be a 17mm axle as well.

That's what I thought, but I was very reluctant to spend that kind of cash without being certain. If it's the same axle, does that mean that the length is kosher as well?

From there I guess all I really need to worry about is a stay for the drum?

Thanks again for the input, you guys rock!

Yeah stay for the drum there is an SR500? stay that bolts on the disk lower. I think but it's hard to find too. Call me a skeptic I'd want to see the inside of that drum and the shoes before I plunked down an offer near $400.

Yes, $400 is ridiculous. A guy I helped with a bobber build got a whole rolling chassis parts bike for about $75. He used the wheels, gave me the engine.

$400 is kinda high but not ridiculous for a XS1 drum front. a rusty one with no shoes a broken cable tab and "who knows" drum surface recently sold for about $275 shipped on fleabay. over 300 has been the norm in the last year on the bay. (when you find one for sale...)

He says he has a TX750 a two year only bike. I hope he has either the 74 or the engine mods have been done if a 73....

Let's see a pic of the motor.

The TX750 was 73 and 74 only. In 72 it was a XS2 650. There was a TX650 in 74.

Like Gary say's. If you have a TX750,,, hope for the upgraded motor. They were a highly hated bike at the time because of self destruct problem's. One of the fix's was an extended oil sump. But that may give you clearance issue's with a lowered bike.

So let's see a pic of the motor so we can be sure what kind of bike you have. It will go a long way on getting the correct advice from these guy's. :D

Here's a pic of a TX750 motor. Does yours look like this.

I am fairly sure looking at the front, lower and rear engine mounts on his frame that we are talking about a TX750.
It's quite possible a 73 TX750 has a "born on" date in 72

Yep. I agree.

I just went and looked at my 73 TX750,,, and you're right about the mount's. TX750 for sure.

Yea, it's definitely a 73, with a 72 date... or so the title says. I'm honestly unsure if the engine mods have been done, but the guy I got it from rode it for the past four years and it hasn't blown up yet, fingers crossed I guess.

The motor was dirty as hell. I could tell it had a pretty serious oil leak from somewhere, I've been nervous about it to be honest after everything I've read after the trade.

I guess all I can do is clean it up, re gasket everything and hope for the best.

thanks for the replies.

Post some picture's.

Forget common knowledge about the TX750 and do a little reading in this link. Sure the bike had problems but they got sorted but the bad rep wouldn't go away so the bike was considered a failure but in reality they are a good bike if the mods have been done to them.

Speed and Sports have extensive parts for these bike. The prices are what you would expect from a dealer but the selection is better for the TX750 than for the XS650. There is an ebay mob who have piston kits, (piston, gudgeon pin, rings and clips), for $100.00 a set, delivered..
