Anyone have experience with vintage style tires as it relates to performance. I'm looking at rears in the 4.00x18 size specifically, the Firestone (coker made replica) and Avon Safety Mileage. I don't ride above 65 regularly, mostly back roads. Bike has a low stance, so no heavy leaning going on here. Would either of these work or do I really need to go for something like the Bridgestone Spitfires?

Any comments would be appreciated.

If I remember correctly, those avons are made with modern compounds, but the look hasnt changed.

I run the old school Shinko e240 mt90-16 on the back and a 21 inch Avon speedmaster on the front. I have not had any issues at all in dry or wet conditions. Sometimes I forget the back tire is blocky and have leaned the bike over pretty far around corners it has always tracked great.

I'm running K70's, they're fine on pavement and great on gravel as long as you're not stupid. But they are a "square-shaped" tire, keep that in mind.
