what brake fluid to use

i put a harley rear mastercylinder on my xs-650 and im still running the yamaha brake.should i use the dot 3 or dot 5?

Don't use the brown stuff with the chunks in it ...
dot 3 or 4 but don't mix them with 5

Ditto. 3 is fine, 4 has a higher boiling point usually for more abuse (heat). Dot 5 is silicone based, and when used in an existing system previously using 3 or 4, all the rubber parts will swell and restrict flow. Dot 5 is great though, IF the whole system is new.

Use Dot 3 or 4. Dot 4 if you're using your bike like there's no tomorrow.
