Started cleaning up my carbs to re-jet them and notices a lot of the screws on the top, float bowl and connectors are stripped or almost there. I also noticed I was missing a gasket which I guess could be the reason why gas was coming out. I got new boots from JBM but can anyone suggest where to get new gaskets and hardware or should I just do Mikes and a hardware store? I have BS38's

Thanks

Mike's is probably best and easiest for the gaskets. Just get the individual gaskets you need though, don't buy the rebuild kits. The rebuild kits usually contain many incorrect parts so are a waste of money for the most part. I would pass on the jets from Mike's. They are knock-offs or repros yet cost about the same as the real deal. I recommend using genuine Mikuni mains and pilots.

When it comes time to replace the carb screws, most of us switch to Allen screws. Personally, I use 18-8 stainless ones which I buy in quantity from McMaster-Carr. The carb tops use 2 different length screws, longer where brackets attach, shorter where they don't. Here's what you'll need .....

M5 x 16 - Carb Tops w/ brackets

M5 x 14 - Carb Tops, no brackets

M4 x 12 - Float Bowls

There is a special lock washer made for Allens called a "high collar". It has a smaller O.D. so it fits better under the heads but is slightly thicker than a normal lock washer to compensate for this .....

The float bowl screws can also be used on the choke lever and choke bodies. The beauty of stainless is you can cut or grind it shorter and not worry about rust. You can get the longer carb top screws and just shorten a few for those no-bracket spots.

I use the standard type. Low heads usually take a smaller Allen wrench size than a normal Allen screw and the sizes on these little screws are small enough already.
