Removed these from my XS1B this evening.
Seals are missing, one of the internal brass filters is busted.
Filters that rise up into the tank (if there ever were any) are missing too.

Is it worth trying to restore these with the various kits available, or would I be better off just buying the Chinese replacements that Mikes XS and Yambits now sell ?

I've done both with good results.
On the early bikes there is no filter on the tank side of the petcock.
There is a functional difference between them. Off on oem is right side forward and left side reverse.
Aftermarket off position on both is forward.
Reserve is opposite of off for both.

I actually like the early petcocks better, they have a more compact design , and I like the fact that they are factory.

They are not hard to clean up and make functional,

Just for a quick visual reference, I put a dot of red paint in the off position. 😄

I too like the factory ones because they are original. The aftermarkets I got are just as compact.
Where I run into trouble is I have two XS2's, one has oem the other has aftermarket. I have to remember when I stop where the shut off position is depending on which bike I'm riding.

That’s a good problem to have :) more than one XS
