XS650 advance rod question.

I have just put an advance rod into my cam , that was originally an electronic ignition bike. On the advancer side of the rod , there is a drive pin , a nut and a washer. Whar are they for ?? Am i missing something ??

The advance unit itself? That's what the nut pin and washer are there for.... to hold the advance plate in place.

I just put Mike’s ignition kit in comes with advance rod when all assembled slight play side to side, cannot find missing part in manual like I left something out? Is slight play normal.

Very slight play is normal. You have an excessive amount. I would shim some of that out. First tighten the nuts though, maybe that will eliminate some of it at least. I had what I considered too much play on mine, mind you not nearly as much as yours, but more than I was comfortable with. My timing mark jumped around a lot at idle. I shimmed it out, leaving only maybe like .006" to .008" (to allow for expansion once hot). This cured than bouncing timing mark which made the bike run a little smoother as a result.
