Hey I've got some questions for all you Aussies out there —

In two weeks I'll be flying down to Australia where I'll be spending the next serval months living and working. Here's what I'm thinking - What better way to see your beautiful country than by motorcycle!

So, how's the market for semi-reliable used bikes down there? An XS would be great, it'd be nice to have one thing in my life that I'm familiar with :)

Around these parts, I could spend under $1000 and get a great running old bike, for example (1, 2, 3). I'm hoping for a similar situation down under, will I be disappointed?

Not sure where exactly I'll be living yet, flying into Syd and so far have a bit of work lined up in Brisbane.
Thanks for advice guys!

The main issue in Aus is registration.

Every vehicle has to go through "rego" each year, and its not exactly a breeze to pass.

A lot of the old bikes you see for sale will not have current rego, which means an inspection would be necessary, PLUS the cost of rego. It works differently there where the rego carries over from owner to owner, so you can buy a car or bike with 6 months rego remaining, transfer it to your name and just ride it. No basic insurance costs. A vehicle with 9 months rego for example, is worth more then one with 3 months, as the new owner knows they have to spend the $1000+ on rego within 3 months of their new purchase.

That being said, bikes do cost a hell of a lot more there, and even finding a non-runner/non-rego'd vintage bike for a 1000 is quite a stretch.

Id get a postie bike (Honda ct90 or 110). Cheap, reliable, and they are everywhere.

Well that sounds like total pain in the ass. $1000 a year from registrations:yikes: I guess that's what I get for leaving the good ol' US of A

Im not sure if I'm humble enough to be caught anywhere on this earth riding a CT90. Interesting your postmen ride them though!

$1000+ in rego?

Using equote tool, $282.40 for 12mnths (purchase price effects cost as transfer tax is applicable). This is for QLD, other states costs are different, but not that different.

If it has current rego it must be sold in a 'road worthy condition' and have a current safety certificate. If its sold without rego you must get a safety certificate, I just paid $60 for one.

As to rego each year. In QLD it is a breeze. if you renew your rego no re-inspection is needed - ever. In other states may be different.

And the original question - All our vehicles cost a lot more. Used bike market is tough. Lots of people are onto them. So prices are pretty high. Best online places to look are gumtree and ebay. Local newspapers classifieds sometimes offer a great bargain.

In A.C.T you can rego a bike for 3 , 6 or a full twelve months without an inspection, if it's out of rego for more than 12mths then an inspection is required

If you want an XS thats running you will pay for it anything from $4k onwards

For touring around one of the best value for money and bang for buck is the early Honda CB supersports ( I reckon)

There are some classifieds you should look at

Canberra and region http://www.allclassifieds.com.au/ac/ac0007, I'd be happy to offer a second opinion

gumtree is another Oz wide site http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-motorcycles-scooters/c18322

and then there is ebay au. http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/Motorcyc...orcycles&_fln=1&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282

sounds like a great trip you gonna have especially as it will be summer, pm me if you need a riding partner south of Sydney
