I have a buddy who is looking to build a custom XS, he's is looking at two frames, a '75 and a '83 Special. What are the differences between the two?

nothing as far as what he needs they are the same, a title is biggest issue.
rear shock mounts and rear hoop are in a little different location.

The frames have no relation to the size of the forks. The stems are the same on the 34mm and 35mm triple trees, meaning either the 34mm or 35mm triple trees can be swapped into either the standard or special frame

As ggGary said the shock topmounts are farther forward on the special frame. The sidestand mount is different as well as the ignition coil mount. The way the sidecovers attach. The rear foot peg mounts.
All these things are small and easy to get around.

around.... don't remember, someone else had posted them a long time ago, I had stored copies in my XS folder. The repair manual has those pics too. IIRC
