Ok so after what seems like years, I have finally got an xs in my hands... OR should I say parts, Think I have enough to get me going for now... Frame was allready cut for hard tail, I got the hard tail included and got some parts to get me going as well. Here is the current state of my build.

Hairic, looks like a fun project. A couple of words of advice, it looks to me like who ever cut the frame for the hard tail made a couple of mistakes since the hard tail looks to be a david bird style. They cut the frame to far forward (you will have a bit of fab work on the bottom tubes to make it work) and when you go to put the hard tail on make sure to put the motor back in the frame so that the engine mounts can be made to line up before welding the tail on. I can't wait to see those exhausts on though I think those look pretty bad ass.

Ok Thanks for the info ippy, The exhaust looks pretty bad ass though. I have ran into a little snag, I have some books ordered but they are not here yet. Can somone tell me what this is.

can this be bypassed or anything?

That really depends on what type of ignition you are going to run. If you plan on running points or the original Pamco Ignition you will need a complete ATU including the advance rod and disc that engages the flyweights. If you are going to run the new Pamco with E-advance then you will still need the advance rod but not the ATU (the part in your pic). If the engine is equipped with a factory tci ignition then you don't need any of the ignition stuff attached to the cam. I can't comment on any of the other types of ignitions out there because I have not done any reading on any of them just the ones I mentioned. Hope this helps muddy the waters a little. HAHA

haha yeah i didnt even want to think of any of the electicals yet... but im trying to gather a list of things I need to avoid shipping cost... Thanks for the help though.

You may want to post a pic of what is under the left side engine (alternator) cover so we can see if it has the tci ignition that comes on the later models, also a pic of what is under the left side breaker cover (opposite side from the atu). It would help us to identify what parts are there and what type of ignition to suggest.

Ok im not sure if this is what you are after or not. This is basically what i believe to be all the parts to my ignition sytem that I have right now...

Im also wondering on my timing chain adjuster is there a rod and spring that I am missing or is this style just different than what I usually see, This is all that was there when I pulled it out

Assuming the cam chain tension adjuster is original to the engine, you have a 1970-1973 engine, 256 model. Look on the front of the engine for a serial number and you can cross reference the year looking at this thread from the tech page: http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42

Here's a parts diagram from the yamaha site for the tensioner assembly, for a 1973 model. Does your engine have an electric starter?

Unless its in a parts box, you are missing the rotor.

I was told the motor is a 78, has compression release, I am missing the rotor, I seen the "stator" i beleive its called laying in the pile of my parts and until tonight assumed it was an extra part that was thrown in, but its not and I am missing the rotor... So ill add that to the list of things I need, The starter is not there either but it does have the ability to be an electric start.

Alright, some good pics there. The first thing you need to do is verify what year motor you have, as hmusket says use the number that is stamped on the front of the engine to look it up in the list he linked. You probably need to get in there and get a good idea of just what you have, take pics of everything and if you have questions about what the parts are post the pics and someone will help you identify them but be patient sometimes we aren't on here. Do you have a manual? If not there are some downloads available, do a search and I am sure you can find it. Good luck and hang in there.

It should fit ok as long as you use the engine mounts from the 82 frame.
In your pics in post #10 the first and last are not ignition parts.
Pic #1 is where the alternator goes.
Pic #2 are the points.
Pic #3 is advancer parts.
Pic #4 is the alternator stator.
I would test the stator white wires for ohms. Look at the plug on the end of the wires Number them 1, 2, 3. Using your VOM or Volt Ohm Meter use the lowest ohm scale.
Touch the leads together, this will give you a reading. Remember this reading.
Not test the white wires, from 1-2, 2-3 and 1-3. They should all read the same. >9 ohms. Your reading may not be that. So now you have to subtract the first reading, just touching the leads, from the test reading.
On one of my meters the leads read .7 ohms. Using this meter and when I test the white wires I get all three testing at 1.6, subtract the .7 from the 1.6 and you get .9. This is the actual reading on the wires. My other meter the leads test at .1 ohms.
If your stator test out ok then all you need is a good rotor. These and a regulator and a rectifier and your charging system will be a good one.
On the ignition parts you have I might set them aside. Get a Pamco from Mike's item #14-0907 uses an ok coil but the plug wires can't be easily replaced. Item #14-0913 has a better coil with replaceable plug wires.
Both of these kits come with an advancer rod.
Just install and you good to go.

Ok thanks leo. I will try and get to that tonight to see where I stand. As of now I dont want to tear into the motor to much as I need it together to mount back into the frame so I can weld the hardtail on, Waiting for thanksgiving break to do that and I need to sharpen up on my tig welding since its been several years since I have welded anything tig.
