What is the proper valve lash on a 73 TX650? I have written my notes .003 intake and.006 exhaust. I checked the manual and it says .004 intake and .008 exhaust. Which one is it? Can't remember where i got my info for this in my notes.

Since that aspect of these engines never really changed a ton, its really preference. Yamaha changed them tighter later on to keep noise down im sure..but with that comes valve tip wear. I run .003 on my 74 intakes. Used to be .004. .008 is waay to loose
Always .006 exhaust.

Funny thing is, the klrs we have run .007 to .009 on both...loosest i have seen.

Yes, it's a mystery as to why Yamaha changed the settings so many times over the years. The motor was virtually unchanged. Granted there was that different 256 cam on the early models, but that still doesn't explain things. Yamaha speced various settings for it as well, in some cases the same as for the later 447 cam ('70 was .006" and .012", '71 was .003" and .006"). Depending on which Service Data chart you look at, some spec 3 and 6 for both the '70 and '71 models. The Sevice Data chart I have for the '73 model specs 3 and 6.
