What is different about a '75 gas cap?

I just got a nice tank and side covers from a '75 XS. The price was nice, so wasn't too concerned with the missing gas cap, figured mikes would have one or just swap over from my current one. But now it seems like no one carries a gas cap for 75-76. Mikes specifies only for 77 and up standards, and the few others places I could find specified 74 & 77+. Were 75-76 really that different and no one makes a replacement?

76 takes a standard replacement cap. It is 74 and 75 that have the odd cap.
You can still get the OEM cap assembly new from Yamaha.

The above diagram says the cap assembly part # is 584-24602-00-00.
boats.net sells that part here:

boats.net also shows the cap assembly as part # 1E7-24602-00-00 in the above drawing.

Note that the price is the same for both numbers. They are probably the same part.

Be a hero and order the 584-24602-00-00 part, I trust that number from biker.net more, and report back in this thread when you get it. You will be doing us all a service.

The '74-'75 gas cap assembly is very unique. The cap is just a cap. The lock and latch are separate parts that mount on the tank. They remain there when the cap is opened. You say you're missing the cap. Do you have either of those other two items? I'm thinking that if you do get the 584 cap, even if it is the correct one, it will only be the cap - no latch, latch spring, or lock included. Without the latch and latch spring, it won't stay closed.

Do some research on eBay. Look up RD350 gas caps and gas tanks. They've got some good pictures showing all the needed parts. There's even some latches and locks listed. No latch springs though, at the moment anyway. This may prove more difficult and expensive than acquiring the tank itself was, lol.

Yes the 74/75 Gas caps are completely different to the later models

You will find Yamaha used the same gas cap for the period 73-75 on RD250's, RD350's TX/XS500'S TX750's and TX/XS650's

73TX, TX74A and XS75B have the same gas cap. 76C -79F Standard have a different cap and the 78SE-83J Specials have a different one again.

Caution; In the second Boats.net link It has 2 no's for the gas caps. Click on the part no's and it tells you what other models/years the parts where made for.
There are discrepancies matching dates with part no's. You will see they state XS1 and XS2 caps a re the same as TX74A and XS75B. Not so..............They also state the TX74A and XS75B has the same part no as the later 76C-79 Standard and 78-83 Specials

Yup. Had a mint 74 tank inside......I lost the cap. Thought no biggie. Till I went to order one. Ebay tank was cheaper to clean and repaint for me.

584-24602 is the OEM reference from Mikes for the 76+ standard cap. I don't trust that that is the right one.
