So im planning on trying to find an xs650 this weekend, i figured i would start with some junkyards and see what i could find. does anyone know of any good junkyards, or anywhere i could find an xs650 for a decent price. im not real concerned with the condition of it, i pretty much just need a frame and engine.

Have you tired looking on your local Craigslist? I've found almost all of the bikes I've bought in the last 5 years on there.

+1 on the craigslist. Junkyards will have just that, junk. Pay the same or just a little more and get a running bike with title.

I agree and I disagree with the junk comment .. my first XS I bought from a junk yard it had been sitting there for as long as I can remember .. frame was cracked from freezing water .. but the engine was /is in great condition .. best of all it cost me 40$ no wheels no tank no seat .. I carry the bike home in the back of civic (I have pics !!!) ..

just use common sense about what your buying .. just because its a xs dosent mean you should buy it .. and Ive never got a bike /car/ anything from a yard with any kind of legit paper work .. usually just a scrap steel, carbon copy

Bobs used motorcycles parts has A TON of xs650s amongst other moto related stuff. I believe its off of Elwood in Phoenix

Atleast in California if you buy a motorcycle from a junk yard/recycler, etc you can only be issued a salvage/rebuilt title for the bike. Might want to check AZ laws regarding that.

I have no input what-so-ever to this thread. But, Poverty...Pics or it didn't happen. :)

thanks guys for the input, i have tried craigslist but all the bikes on there were already built, and i wanna do the build myself. im gunna start with bobs and see where it goes.

thats exactly what im looking for haha. i only have about 500 hundred bucks right now to spend, so id rather find an old beat up bike and do all the work myself, plus its more stisfying in the end when you can say you built the bike from the frame up by yourself.

well like I said the frame was trashed .. bottom rails were split and rusted out .. it now serves as a engine stand .. so basically I got a engine and a set of headers for 40$ .. the rest was iffy on condition

Poverty, you ROCK...reminds me of my younger days, took a 1966 Triumph Bonneville home in a 1975 Chevy! Yes, it was a full size car with a big azz trunk, so it was almost like cheating!
So how did you title a junkyard find? Impossible to do here in NY State...

HAHAHA hell yeah .. !!

i never titled it .. I used it to practice things like removing neck plates and cutting for hardtails .. till it was just a stump ( the neck is for sale in my F/S thread) not the bottom is a engine stand

The blue / grey stand is all that remains of the frame .. so I guess I got my money back just in the making of the stand .. they cost like 39$ new LOL

I've purchased from bobs, and i can tell you from my 5 trips i was lucky to stumble across a sealed XS motor that i dug out from under several others behind a semi trailer for 250 bucks with nothing on it. I've been through almost every XS he's got ( about 30 scavenged carcasses ) no electric, usable carbs, stators/PMA's, kick/starters, alternator cover plates. if you think you are gonna walk in with 500 bucks to a junk yard and ride away into the sunset you got another thing coming. I am doing all the work myself to this motor and im looking at at least 1600 bucks just to make it road worthy and reliable to where i wont be stranded on the AZ highways, not even including if i wanted to bore or rephase.. add an extra 5+ grand onto that and I'll have my nice dream build. i gave up my pipe-dream of a $1200 ride awhile ago, you want something to be proud of i completely understand.. but you are going to end up investing some hard cash and hours (days, months, & so far 3 dinners with apology explanations to the wife about missing dough from the accounts) and that's to say you even have the right equipment or friends with nice fab shops ( hydraulic benders, tig/mig, band saw, lifts, full set of wrenches and necessity items for an everyday fabrication project ) not trying to discourage you because I am all for the DIY'fers but just beware because that little snowball idea you got in your pocket is gonna turn into a blizzard and f**k your face.... if you are looking for fun and don't want to sink yourself into a year long garage queen then save the 500 until you get about 3grand and buy the ride able & registered bobbers on craigslist. but if you are determined, then chop on my friend!

i totaly get that, im in no rush to build this bike i plan on taking my sweet time with it. i dont expect to walk out with a running bike for 500, but it will still get me at least something to start with. all the tools and equipment wont be an issue because i work in a fab shop. iv got plenty of acceses to all the tools il probably ever need.

Id stilll say your biggest issues is going to be with a title .. your going to have to RE-located a frame after you pick up the Jy bike.. and its not worth that hassle going rate on a titled frame is over 250$ not including shipping (90-150$) (correct me if I wrong someone but Ive not found one for less) so already you said you were looking at engines for 300 plus another 2-300 frame and boom your out of your starting budget and you still dont have shit to work with

srsly dude .. save up another 200$ and buy a titled bike of mom and pop on craigs list and save your self the inevitable trouble we have ALL went thru gong this route
