Bought an XS 650 from e bay last year.
Definitely a 'pig in a poke'. Loads of problems.
Got the first run out of her today, Christmas eve.
The pleasure seems to grow with every new XS.

Yes, quite a few headaches. Engine total re-build. Re-bore. Previous owner had stripped it and put it back together with quite a few bits missing. Frame mods. New loom. Braced swing arm. Twin disc conversion. New seat. Battery box.
The wife always making comments such as 'you love those bloody bikes more than me'. I didn't have the heart to answer!

Seat was bought via e bay from a company in Thailand, they sent it to me in the UK. I did suggest going to Bangkok to pick it up but wife said no..............can't think why! Had to use 5mm rubber strips to raise it up 10mm to allow clearance for the top of the battery box. Heavy duty velcro patches on frame and seat are fine to secure it.
Mudguard was bought off of e bay as a universal item then cut in half to bolt to the XS plastic rear mudguard.
Rear light is a Lucas or Sparco bought on e bay.
I will try and find contact details for all items for you.

Thanks for the links - I am looking at a brat type seat & have looked at the motolanna one before - it looks much better on the bike..
Others I have looked at have been bratstyle, Nitroheads etc, but they are 3 x the price of the motolanna one.
Is it comfortable enough..??

Pretty comfortable......................mind you I do have some of my own padding!

yeah...looks real nice Tim. Good to see a bike not chopped or bobbed for a change.
Excuse the mundane question but where are you aiming to fix the reg plate ?:wink2:

The tail light is also a number plate bracket. Need to get an MOT next week to get it registered and an age related number.
Previous owner only had boxes of bits, no number and no paperwork.

That looks pretty smart mate, a bit like what I'm aiming for-a tough looking custom streetbike but still very rideable :)
Are they XJ650 front brakes you've used?

had the same deal with mine earlier this year , boxes of bits...but at least mine came with paperwork and registration. I guess yours was a US import like mine?

Really like what you've done to the bike.

XS650 front end. Any front disc from an XS will do and I think, don't quote me, that all the mag alloy wheels were drilled and tapped both sides.
Had to trawl e bay for a left hand caliper as they didn't use twin disc set up for many models. Hoses and fittings were from an XS1100.

European model, 3L1. Although I have quite a few XS parts from previous projects hanging around so quite a few model years feature.

I was curious as I have what I think is an XJ set-up that I found in my shed, I think it'll all go straight on but haven't as yet found anyone else who's done it and since I'm working on a tight budget I don't want to go into rebuilding the calipers and master cylinder only to find it doesn't work.
Where did you get your battery box? It looks well smart :)

I'm intending to fit a second front disc to my 79 xs650 eventually. I read somewhere that the early 2x piece front discs can't be used on the later bikes because the early discs are a smaller diameter and different outset ?

Minton mods states that you can use xs750 calipers but with 650 brake pads . Not sure if you can use 750 discs and calipers ?

Someone on here mentioned that the standard 14mm diameter brake master cylinder can be improved by replacing with a smaller diameter cylinder ? presumably the smaller diameter creates higher pressure ? I think bernouilii said that :D

Memory is not as good as it used to be but I think the calipers were early XS750 calipers bought from DK Motorcycles.
Whenever I use non XS650 Yamaha parts I go on line and check the numbers on Yamaha parts diagrams. There are loads of sites with the parts diagrams on.
The master cylinder was a universal one I found on e bay. It is supposed to be for a single caliper set up but seems to be okay for the twin set up. I will let you know at MOT time.
