Anyone make a starter block off plate?

I'm ditching the starter, does any company make a block off plate? I haven't seen one yet and didn't find anything searching the forum. It's probably not all that hard to make but sometimes its more logical to pay a few bucks for someone else's anguish

The company MikesXS has one listed under "starter and related parts" it's called The "starter block off kit" Part #24-6520 $16.95 USD. I used one and it works GREAT ... remember tho you still need the seal so order a new one at the same time... leak free.

A lot of guys use a freeze plug instead. Much cheaper and seems to work better. Either way, be sure to run some Yama-bond around whatever you throw in there.

All you need is a 1 & 53/64" (which is also approximately 46.5mm) freeze plug and some Yamabond.

You unbolt the starter motor, pull it out, open the starter motor gear housing on the other side, pull out those gears, stick in the plug, and close it all up!

not that ive used a freeze plug, I used mikexs kit. but ive read of some one cracking the case trying to wedge a freeze plug in. food for thought. don't kill the messenger and all that lot.

Freeze plugs are fairly soft and malleable so they will seal well. Maybe the person used something other than a freeze plug? I used the above size plug with sealant and it has worked fine for me.

I did the freeze plug method. It isn't exactly like sliding a grilled cheese in the VCR. Remember that commercial, Ha, Ha. I can see how you can crack the case. Luckily i didn't. Some intense pounding to get her home. Maybe freezing the plug before install would be a good idea. Just my 2 cents.

Freeze the freeze plug? Hmm... The harder part is getting that ripped up rubber O-ring out!

Yep, I've used the freeze plug on a few builds now. Yep, pop the freeze plug in the freezer (freeze plug contracts) the warm the cases with a blower (cases expand). Then tap in the plug. When the cases cool, they contract ever so slightly and the plug expands Ever so slightly - really tight fit

Also, I have 8 spare freeze plugs if anyone's interested in purchasing them. The cost of a single plug from me will probably more than a single from a hardware store; HOWEVER, 1 & 53/64" is an uncommon size. If your shop doesn't have them in stock, they need to be special ordered, plus they come in sets of 10. Unless you have 10 XS's on which you're deleting starters, you'll have a small surplus like myself.

I've got 8 plugs I'm willing to part with for $3.99ea, that's with shipping in the continental U.S. from Chicago, IL (beats paying $12.39 for a bulk special order or $15+ for a kit!). Private message me if you're interested!
