gggGary's latest XS project "madness"

Those mufflers you replaced (fixed baffle Dunstall reps) are pretty bad. That's what I started out with on my 650. I didn't realize how bad they were until, like you, I replaced them with something better, lol.

Yeah they were GFA when I first put em on, motor sounded like it was going to have a hernia, They have just one TINY exit hole, long ago I drilled 6) 5/16" holes in the perimeter tubes, I actually got out the plumbers right angle drill to make those holes bigger Wednesday morning, I found there were going to be issues making the holes bigger.... I tossed them. Still need to make up good hangers for the Borlas, get working turn signals and a few other details for the crud ride. But I got sidetracked on a couple projects on the bandit yesterday. Those are done except for mounting the new tires, so back on Madness today.

Man getting a "Shed" bike ready for a 100 mile ride can be a challenge but (fingers crossed) Madness is ready for the spring slimey crud run.
Since I started back in on it in late march;
Completely custom rear wheel, sprocket to rotor.
Completely different front wheel, rotors, fender
completely different rear fender, TS's tail light.
different mufflers/mounts.
Ignition sorted, redone.
wiring sorting, changes.
Many carb changes.:cussing:
different gas tank, petcock, several HAH! fuel routing changes.
Different seat, mounts, latch.
Different mirrors grips.
Side covers recountured to make clearance for the air filters painted rattle canned.
Redone oil line routing, side filter cover, chasing (curing??) leaks.
As built by Rod Machado back in the 80's

Didn't realize it was Rod Machado's bike. I have had that Blue Flamed pic in my file from years ago........It went through my head the other day .....you need flames on the bike.......not. lol

Understand the change of muffler, but for me the those just don't look to complement the bike.................

For us down under its the 7th so where are those pics............

I just realized now, and went back and looked. A rear drum hub is what you fitted the disc too. Awfully heavy? Why not the front disc hub conversion?

there's a story to be told about yesterday!!!! Will tell it in the slimey crud thread with pics of lots of cool bikes.

Maybe it's just the pic? Are those 38mm Mik's? The carb top just looks big.
It did have VM38s when I got it. During the tuning thrash a few years ago they got swapped for VM34's The 38's are still here......

Skull I kind of agree, I really did like the LOOK of those emgos with the upsweep I added. The Borlas sound nice, loud but not super obnoxious, they do a great job of killing the annoying high frequency tones.

No it's a suzuki disk rear hub, total rear wheel weight dropped three pounds from the mag it replaced, even with the addition of the cush drive.
Disk side a tin shield covers this part of the hub

Ass end view of those emgos.

Another rear wheel possibility also with a cush drive, it has a 38 tooth on it now, not a lot of room to get it down to a 34.. about a WM5x18 rim. complete with mc!

I suspect this one will take another pound or two off the rear.

So i was chasing a fuse popper up in the headlight, one thing LED :wink2: to another.
now the headlight is Broview LED, the handlebar risers are Virago, the headlight ears are aftermarket aluminum, the wiring will be nearly totally revamped, the fork air caps are gone, the fork oil's changed, new fork springs are on order, throttle cable's changed, RH control has a headlight switch, the ignition switch is going to the back fender. The gauges are being moved back and up a bit. Voltmeter and USB port getting added, steering bearings (already tapered rollers) cleaned, inspected, greased reset.. and a few other things,.

Got it "rewired" and back together, rode it today. Also first run after dropping the needles back down to 4th from bottom. Did plug chop from full throttle but haven't looked yet. lots of other little details changed, added or worked on.

Turnsignals and headlight are LED, brighter than the video makes them look The red portion in the rear has both brake and tail sections but the difference between is kinda minor.

Gary, I just can’t believe the transformation of Madness. It has become one really slick looking bike and it sounds great.
Is that the ignition switch hidden in the rear fender? What a cool bike! So is it your new favorite?
PS the paint looks great!
