Petcocks ?

Hold on there.. try this. At fill up reset your trip meter to 0 . Run with the petcock “on” until the engine sputters lacking fuel. Note the miles traveled. Switch the petcocks to “res” for additional run distance, go for fuel.
Sound reasonable ?

Yes..for the first few times then once i know full tank range then its back to "res' all the time...its only 3 gallons so maybe 120 miles tank range?

Riding with petcocks in reserve position means............your wife is going to make you sell the bike because she will be trucking you home every time you run out of fuel............Petcocks........Off when sitting..........On when starting and riding...........Reserve as a safe guard to get you to the next fuel station.

+1, As machine says.....do several Trip meter rides, (just to get an average), with a full tank and note the mileage for when the need for reserve on.

Not the original reason for................but...........can be used as a carb sync if not running vacuum petcocks .............but...........cannot be used as a carb sync if running vacuum petcocks
My buddy told me to use a rolling paper to sync my carbs. Ooof.

Ha..Wife? what Wife? i have a habit of bringing an extra gal. of fuel in a saddlebag or seat bag...I have been riding my XS1100s that way for years..i am not a newbie at this... I will do a few test runs beforehand so that i know what to expect...but i am set in my ways...
I will run the tank dry on "Res" and bring an extra gallon of gas..That way i can know total miles to empty..in addition to knowing total miles to reserve...

Ever had to lean that bitch over all the way before just to squeeze every bit of gas out to make it to the next exit? Run it on half choke? Full choke? I know we all have before. Maybe not on a bike with 2 petcocks. But still. LOL.

Funny I just had a Chincom petcock out of the Radian It also has a mile tall "on" tube and a small tank. I found some OEM petcocks so will see if I can rescue them and go back to vacuum.

Mad-Max. As others have pointed out your petcocks are manual - I'm guessing from Mike's. See link:

I use the off position when parked. I fill up my tank every 100 km to keep tabs on my fuel consumption with VM34 carbs. (Using about 7 litres (out of the 11 litre special tank) per 100 km - about 33 miles/US gallon).

The one you've linked to won't fit a Special tank because the screw spacing is wrong. Mike's does sell a manual replacement for the Special.

madmax-im -- ask Phil where the petcock came from. The only manual replacement we know of is the Mike's one. Would be interesting if another one fits.
I already have discussed this with Phil..i didnt ask where he got them and at this point I am not going to bother him again..Everything he did was for a reason. BTW IN my XS1100 panniers i used a leak proof vapor proof 1 gal. gas can ..No cigarette butts are going to ignite it..thats just plain ignorant...

One more note..every motorcycle that i have owned..gets the Miles to empty run..i carry the extra fuel and purposefully run it till its gone...I have been doing this for years. My XS1100's range was 175 miles..so i would know to look for gas at 150 miles on the trip odo. And i always ran the petcocks on Reserve...Laugh all you want...

Ain't sayin it wasn't for a reason. Maybe it was a good reason. That's why I say ask him where it came from. If a Honda BR549 manual petcock fits, the community needs to know it. Be bold!
