lets vote to have a sticky thread that reads "ATTN NEW MEMBERS - use the search menu before asking a question"

not to be a dick, but so many questions are asked every day that have been answered with pages and pages of information...

Not trying to be a dick myself, but you asked a few questions only a couple of months ago that are fairly FAQ, and could have easily been answered with a little searching whether it be here or on google. The issue with your pipes blueing has been addressed before, specifically on the xs with the inner pipes cracking on one or both pipes, whether it be here or on 650rider. And on just about every old bike site out there something similar has been discussed. The same goes for your electrical issue.

I'm a strong supporter of the "search first, ask questions never" rule, as can be seen by looking at the topics I've started on this and every other forum I visit. It doesn't really matter to me if other people ask the same questions repeatedly, why would it?

I think it's up to Travis to address the issue if it's a problem for him. If he doesn't care, I'm not really sure why you do...

haha ok.

new members probably don't even know of the search, which is why i wrote that. i didn't see it up there for a while myself. if i saw a sticky thread saying 'look for a search tool' i would've noticed it before i asked anything. i only learned of the search when someone in a post said, use the search. haha

it doesn't bother me either if people ask. but searching you might find the answer faster than waiting for someone to reply to a post..

- not sure there is a need for a rule as such...if people get pissed off answering then they will simply stop doing so

- on the other hand, if you have a problem then it is to your advantage to research it as a part of your learning curve...it is immediately clear to most whether or not you have a clue and informed questions are more likely to solicit an answer

- there are 2 search mechanisms...
the Tech search in the top tool bar and
the Search function in the lower tool bar...this link is for the advanced search

- the search function works well, using both key words and tags

So, what you're really saying is that we need this:

DUMBASS_BUTTON.png

See, it's working already. I guess Travis needs to put that button right at the top of the page...

I have found that even with using the search tool you don't always find what you are looking for because threads get hijacked or go another direction. Ex I wanted to know where people are relocating their ignitions so I made a thread I had searched but did not find what I was looking for. Then today while reading another thread it had exactly what I was looking for (on nj's bike mounting position) I guess I feel that the search isn't exactly perfect

I just want to push the big red button again...HEHE..sorry.. big red button
mmmm..... dammit Teebs!
Anyway, I can see both sides. Sometimes it gets tiring to see the same question over and over, but it's easy to skip as a viewer. I at first said yes, search, but now I see the importance of the actual response from another member. Sometimes folks just need to feel they are being heard. That's the reason to belong to a group. Otherwise you might as well just use Google. Right?

I voted "fuck that".:shootme:
Now I'll explain why (I hope).Sometimes when reading it can get a little confusing for some (me included) but,by asking the question,it gives a person the chance to get a little clarification. If I had my way, someone would be able to actually show me (I learn best that way) but,I don't always get my way.:(

I'm on the 'fuck that' team. I've been on a number of forums for various hobbies and such. They all would prefer that the thing runs efficiently, but the ones who actually have rules and an attitude about searching just don't feel as welcoming. Honestly, I like to talk about motorcycles and I'm okay with saying things twice so that people aren't scared to post unless they've combed the entire backlog of info.

Also, a search for 'alternator issues' (as I recently searched) may bring up long threads that you have to read through entirely before you realize that they don't answer your specific question.

I'm torn, It is frustrating to see repeat posts, sometimes on the same page but This is a community of learning and sharing so it's hard to say I'm not answering anything until you use the big ass red button (pushed it twice ).

Maybe a sticky that says please review the Tech section first and maybe get a few guys to write a tech article or two. I'll contribute. My first article will be "How to Bag a Skank" :yikes: Could be my best literary work.

for me i hate asking questions then finding it later like with miller. i say if someone asks a question that you know has been answered, just post a link for them to look at. that way you dont have to reanswer and they (me included) still get the info they are looking for :)

I voted "Yeah Dude" Everyone should at least attempt to start there and if doesn't work or they get frustrated post a queston. Seems only logical to me. I know I've been guilty of posting first shame on me. I'll do better in the future I promise.

ok so not a "rule" and no one is forced to search first, just something so new members know of a search. when i signed up i didnt even look at that menu bar where the search is..

sometimes you can't find your answer in searching, but sometimes you can so you might as well try it

Search Function Awareness

I voted "yeah" cuz it's just a good idea in general. But I do get annoyed when a noob asks a question and then a forum regular slams him for not using the "search" function. Just keep it to yourself, okay? To be honest, I don't see much of that behavior here, which says a lot for the helpful nature of the folks here.

Pointing out the search function to a noob within the context of answering his question never hurts, and then the guy'll probably use it next time he has a question.
