I ordered a short clutch cable and perch from MMM at 650central. It eliminates the metal elbow coming out of left side cover.
When ordering, he told me about some special things you need to do when installing but it frankly didn't make sense at the time because I wasn't sitting in front of bike and/ or cable.
I have installed it and can't seem to get tension right. Seems like way too much slack and the return spring won't bring lever back at all. Anyone have experience with these cables?

The directions say "Make sure push screw fully returns. Added spring preload will be required".

I guess I am not sure what added spring preload required means?

Thanks/

No personal experience but it sounds like you may need a shorter/stronger spring on the arm where the clutch cable attaches under the left cover.

Supposedly according to MMM the stock
Spring works fine - just don't know how to add preload as he says in instructions

You didn't lose the ball bearing in the worm screw assembly did you? Do a search for 650 central clutch cable. Some info there about the same issue.

I don't thinking lost ball bearing,
Suppose I will have to remove cover again to check.
I did a search but just can't seem to find any info on what he means by adding spring preload?

I've found the 650central clutch cable works just great! I use a little "Lock-Ease" graphited lubricant down the cable occasionally. If you have the cable not connected at both ends, the inner cable should move, within the sheath, with almost zero friction.

Make sure the path from the lever to the engine case is smooth..............no sharp bends. The stock return spring has more that enough tension to return the worm gear actuator.

The worm gear actuator can be installed in 4 different positions. If you have it in the wrong position, then perhaps the return spring would not be tensioned properly.

Post a picture of how you have the cable and return spring connected at the worm gear.

i have a clutch cable from 650 central and the first time i pulled the clutch handle the little thing on the end of the cable that goes on the worm gear shattered in a million pieces!

i got a motion pro cable and havent had problems since!

and the cable is NOT hard to pull at all... probably a faulty unit but oh well

I will take side cover off again and post pics.
I would assume its in correct spot because it was working fine with stock cable and all I did was remove stock cable and connect new cable with worm drive in same spot

The adjuster on the clutch lever on the bars needs to be turned out to remove the slack at the worm end. I had to turn mine almost all the way out for it to work.

I just got one of those cables about a month ago. He gave me the same instructions on the phone that didn't make a lot of sense and went right out the other ear. When I installed the cable I had to adjust the pushrod freeplay (under the chrome cap on the side of the left crank case cover) and take up a little slack at the lever. It's never worked better.
Definitely make sure you didn't lose the ball bearing.

I destroyed my worm gear mechanism trying to loosen that damn nut. Ordered a new assembly from mikes and will try again next week
To be continued.....

This post is a little dated now, but in reference to your pic:

1 - Where's the little ball that goes inside the worm screw adjuster hole?

2 - There's 2 little notches ground into the upper cover web, indicating a history of excessive slop in the drivechain, maybe recently, maybe during Regan's administration. Anyway, chain may have struck clutch pushrod at some time, so might check clutch pushrod for precise straightness...

I took ball out while messing with things
Thanks for noticing two notches- I did not. Will adjust drive chain properly.

Did you ever figure out what he meant by adjusting the spring? I received the same clutch cable today and I'm unsure of what he meant as well.

That cable's about 1/2" longer than stock, the worm arm needs to rotate down a little more to take up the extra slack. So, the return spring on the worm arm needs to be in good shape, or shortened a little, to pull that arm further down...

I finally realized that cable was about a 1/2 inch too long after messing around with it, and 2 different perchs/levers. This was my solution for taking up the extra slack for now.
