this is only off chance , a mates looking for a new / nos 1997-79 suzi gs750 rotor ( alternator but rotor only ) his is stuffed) any leads / ideas would be great.. told him to stick to the xs but... but hes still got the right idea , get a old bike back on the rd .. doesn't want a 2nd hand one as the rest of the bikes been taken back to orig... thanks

thanks scott , had a look but same prob they have the stator but not the rotor which is what he needs might have tracked 1 down in japan but he has to buy the complete unit $$$$$$

thanks scott... found the first listing last night and bought it this morning , mate was rapt even if it will take 4-5 weeks to get here ,that's the first time saw the 2nd listing and I spent hours looking... thanks again for all your help , this forum is great

ahhh thanks... that might exsplain a lot , the mate found a complete alternator set and tried it first but still didn't charge , I will pass that on to him but he doesn't have a computer to look the forum up (also might be the reason I couldn't find a forum being under resources ) fairly amazing in this day and age the mate dave who is a just retired motor machinic and neither he or his wife own or use a computer but then I don't own/use a cell ph

The problem, once he gets the new part, is eliminated with the installation of a Polaris SH775 R/R which is a serious upgrade from the old shunt style. I, too, am a GS'er.
polaris sh775 r/r can you exsplain? what it is / cost /and where do you get one.. thanks any info I will pass on

The early GS your friend has might either have a rectifier/regulator, or separate rectifier & regulator.
In either case, the stock parts are the shunt type that operate the alternator at full current output at all times. It controls voltage by sending the excess current to ground.

The modern Shindengen SH775 R/R & some other choices allow the alternator voltage to vary. They control the bike’s voltage by providing only enough current to get the proper voltage. This generates a lot less heat in the alternator.

The SH775 is used by several powersports manufacturers, including Polaris. The Polaris part # is 4012941
The SH775 used to be pretty cheap but is now around $150.

Haven’t been following the R/R situation — there might be cheaper alternatives.
You don’t have to join the GS forum to do searches. You should find lots of info there.

You can often find them used on fleabay for around 50 bucks. Some prefer the Compufire 55402, but I have no idea the cost on that.

thanks , you blokes are champions , next time he calls in will sit him down in front of the computer and he can read all this first hand , that way he should have a better understanding of the upgrade etc... still reckon he should get a xs650 though (or as well)
