Hi folks. Brand new user here!!! Scored a very nice (needs cleaning) 9/72 manufacture date TX650. 14K miles. I have scoured the internet and cannot find diagrams for this particular model. My serial number puts it in the 72-73 TX650 US range.

I have most of it figured out. Only hold-up is starter switch/handle to safety relay to starter switch wiring. I almost feel comfortable going off the 1974 TX650A diagram....but my color wires are somewhat different. It's down to these four wires...and I should be set. Here is copied and pasted from another forum:

Basically I have a blue/white wire (starter engage?) coming from handle switch and a brown wire (kill switch?) coming from handle switch. My relay has black(ground), Yellow(alternator), then two brown wires. My starter solenoid has a brown and a blue/white wire. I cannot figure out which way these guys need to go!!! I am assuming the blue/white from starter switch/handle goes to one of the brown at safety relay....then brown from kill switch goes to brown at starter solenoid. Then blue/white wire from starter solenoid goes to other brown from safety relay?

I could also use a frame wiring diagram to make sure I have everything routed correctly...I believe I do. Wiring and relay and regulator were all dangling when I got the bike. I am pretty sure I have it back on correctly...not 100% though.

Welcome to the forum, velocejoe.

You'll want to download ALL XS2 and TX650 manuals from this site:

For the XS2:
https://thexscafedotcom.wordpress.com/tag/xs2/

For the TX650:
https://thexscafedotcom.wordpress.com/tag/tx650/

You'll see a lot of duplicates. The TX650 is somewhat of a revised XS2, and uses a lot of XS2 parts and manual info. The supplements note to use XS2 stuff when not covered in TX650 stuff.

Take another close look at your wiring colors. Brown/white is used for the flasher relay. Maybe you're seeing red/white?

650Skull is updating the XS2 wiring diagram, in this thread:

Also, here's the service bulletins:

CORRECTION!!! Sorry. I got mixed up. Saw the pic of the solenoid. So I will try to attach pics here. FIRST, here is what I have: Blue/white (MALE) from starter lever/Switch on right side of handlebar (the kind where decompression lever also provides signal to start the engine). Brown wire (FEMALE) from what I imagine is kill switch. I am not sure where both of these wires go.

TWO brown wires from safety relay: one FEMALE, one MALE.

Blue/white from starter solenoid (FEMALE), Brown from starter solenoid (MALE)...and a pic of solenoid.

I also edited my first post to correct wiring colors and renamed the starter switch to STARTER SOLENOID....to match the verbiage that most others are using. Thanks alot for all the help so far!!!

And yes...I downloaded ALL the wiring diagrams from the site. It was necessary to even get an idea what I had. I will be MORE THAN WELCOME to work on one for the TX650(us)...as it seems to be incorrect or missing altogether. My computer skills are not so hot though. I have to print...draw...scan :(

Yes, the early wiring diagrams are quite lacking in some areas. They have wires labeled with the wrong colors and even some wires missing all together. I can explain how the later starting system works and I'm pretty sure your early one is set up the same way. Let's start with the starter safety relay. Yours has 2 brown wires (later ones have 2 R/W) and these are switched power into and out of the relay, on it's way to "trigger" the solenoid. There is also a yellow wire coming from the alternator that brings a voltage signal once the bike is running and has charging output. That "triggers" the safety relay and breaks the connection between the brown wire running in and the brown wire running out to the solenoid.

Now let's talk about the solenoid. It's nothing more than a heavy duty relay acting upon the heavy battery cable running in and the other heavy cable running out to the starter motor. What "triggers" it is the smaller brown and blue/white wires connected to it. The brown is power coming through the safety relay. To "trigger" the solenoid, that power needs to be grounded and that's what the blue/white wire does. It runs up to your start lever on the handlebars and when you pull that lever, it grounds the blue/white wire.

So, I would connect the male brown from the safety relay to a switched brown in the harness, the female brown to the male brown coming out of the solenoid. The solenoid blue/white should run up to the blue/white coming out of the handlebar start lever.

Finished this up.........

Ran a brown from solenoid to safety Rely............Was missing

Left the brown from safety relay to Red/White after Kill switch and before coils................same as all later wiring diagrams...?????

Added in a key description from the owners manual............

Ideas/problems????

The owners manual description is wrong or maybe just confusing to me. When the key is in the park position the taillight can not be turned off. However when key is in position 1 it does go on and off with the headlight. More than once I had to stop by the side of the road. It was nice to keep the taillight on without the drain on the battery of the headlight. If needed you had the option of turning the headlight on. Can't leave them idle forever on a hot August night. I rode with quite a few Harley guys. Maintenance along the side of the road was not out of the question.

OK, got everything wired up as proposed by 5twins regarding safety relay and kill switch, starter switch and starter solenoid!!!

I do have one other issue....The black MALE wire from the taillamp goes into a connector with two inputs...that only leaves one input for turn signal MALE ground wires(I have two at the moment...these were molested...not sure what original setup was)...do I splice these together then plug into same two-input connector that I plugged taillamp into? Right now there is one wire for each turn signal ground.....both have MALE ends.

Usually there's another multi port ground connector back there, or if not, the single one that accepts 3 bullet connectors, 2 in the front, one in the rear next to where the wire goes in.

I will hook up rear turn signal grounds tonight. I am happy to report that I followed 5twins directions on safety relay to solenoid and handlebar switch wiring and the bike turns over via electric starter!!! All lighting is working...but due to rear turn signal grounds being unhooked...the turn signals do not flash....front or rear..they just light up bright and stay bright when activated. I imagine this is because of the unhooked ground. Hopefully once I wire them up...all should be well. Thanks again for ALL of the input. 650Skull...keep up the good work on the diagrams.....I'm happy to help. I'll take a look at the newest edits you did.
