I have in my possession two camshaft internal bushes and two labyrinth seals which I ordered from Mike's some time ago. When time came to fit these up I found that the bushes were 0.0015" undersize and the seals were a whopping 0.005" undersize.I contacted Mike's about this expecting at least an apology and a refund but they do not want to know about it and said that these seals have been used on numerous rebuilds with no problems - I claim I find stretches credibility to its limits.I have sourced replacement seals and bushes locally and they are the correct OD 0.630" not 0.625" which Mike's labyrinth seals were. Has anyone else had similar problems with these pricks?

Hi Unc: I think you will find that quite a number of Forum members have had similar experiences.

The old problem was they were oversize and a few split the threaded LH side of the cam trying to force them in. In their defense: I haven't done the measuring BUT the late model 80 up cams that didn't have the advance rod 'cause they were TCI ignition had cams that didn't have the hole final reamed to size, so bushings and seals, designed to fit the early model cams were oversize in a late cam. Somewhere along the line they probably changed the spec so the parts would fit the TCI cam dimensions. Use those parts in an early cam and you'll find the problem you have. That's all I have.

Gary's post raises another key point that every new and old member should bear in mind (if I may be so bold) - please always state what year and model of bike you are working on when you post a question or comment to the Forum.

While Yamaha 650 twins from the very first 1970 XS-1s to the last XS650SK Specials in 1984 are very similar, there are some key details which vary quite a bit and so what might be a valid comment for one year could be totally off-base for another year.

There is a whole series of posts and threads on the differences among the various models and even among the bikes of the same year sold in different markets (chiefly these types of issues were related to brake and lighting systems as well as paint colours) - we cannot provide good advice if we don't know what bike YOU are speaking about.

Cheers,
Pete
