Early to Late valve cover mod, blame the Mailman......

Looky what I just got. A present from Baraboo! Thanks Gary! I’ve got a new project, things to polish and leaks to banish!

Beags64 Your jig/holders worked perfect! Covers were a snug fit inside, had to use a wedge in the slot to insert, remove them. You were right 3 jaw is a LOT quicker, used a bit of aluminum pop can folded up as shim between a couple jaws and the jig on the one cover that didn't want to center up. Another set done, lickety split.

Glad they worked out. Couple of the "test" covers I ran were a bit loose in the ring, I just added the shim on the inside. Still had to play with where to put the shim to gain best concentricity.
Looks like Gary's got something to occupy his spare time now :smoke:. Spare time, kinda like extra money, heard of it just never seen it!

Anyone wants this done, let me know, we'll work something out.
A set of 4 will ship first class in the USA for about 5-6 bux. or priority about $7.50 (one way)
I'm currently out of o-rings. Have to change vendors, the price from the company I've been using jumped more than 300% :poo:
I'm not offering polishing.

I wear a full painters suit and a respirator when Im polishing for any length of time and I have a filtering system with a blower fan. Still nasty work. I have looked like that guy in Bobs photo.

I've been using 3mm thick o-rings, slightly larger than the oddball original 2.8mm size, but readily available in all the rubber types (Buna-N, viton, silicone). They fit perfectly .....

Well I’ve been busy working on those tappet covers that Gary machined for me. I have spent a ridiculous amount of time on them. They had the usual corrosion pitting and scuffs on them so I went through all the usual sanding and buffing ritual and when I was done.....well crap...I could still see where the pitting was and scratches from the rougher sandpaper that I hadn’t fully removed. So....I started all over , working up through all the grades of sandpaper then the buffer again.

I also just want to say, Gary’s lathe work is top notch. I measured the o ring recesses he machined into these covers against a factory cover I have and they are dead on! Virtually indistinguishable from factory.

Then I went to install them, first the right front one, popped right on.
And here is where I got hung up. I went to remove the right rear cover and I messed around for 30 minutes and could not for the life of me get the cover off. There was not enough clearance between the carburetor. I have finally come to the conclusion that to get that cover off I’m going to have to pull the carbs loose and move them about 3/8” back. So that means the air boxes have to come off, and maybe the gas tank, just for room? I didn’t feel like starting all that so I stopped for the day.

An observation: I do not have this issue on my 77D, the carburetors are positioned differently and further away from the tappet covers. I can easily slip the covers off.

My XS2, look how much closer the carbs are, they also are positioned higher, this complicates routine valve adjustments.

I’ll post up some photos, when I’ve got this all buttoned up.

I knew sending these to JC:cool: was the hot tip!
Welcome to my world of Up Nort corrosion. (sorry about that!)
Kinda think I just did the tappets on WJL without any big probs. Loosen, twist carbs a bit?
But I mighta done them when I had the carbies off. Kinda sure I 've done a couple other early tappet adjusts also.

Oh no worries! I should’ve been more aggressive on my first pass, I just needed to sand a little more off. I’m VERY Happy with them! :)

I've had the covers off of my XS2, no problems. As Gary suggested loosen the clamps and rotate the carb. Good lucks.
