I just know I'm going to hate myself for this, but...

Most of what's going is odds and ends of rusty, bent, bashed and boogered steel. Very little actually useful without being more work than it's worth. I need to stick a crowbar in my wallet and actually BUY steel for projects. I hear folks do that these days...

Don't damage it.................crowbar that is..

Next thing you will be telling us people buy new things like snowblowers! I might have three or is it four spare parts machines just incase the two main line machines need parts. I will admit that a couple years back I did break-down and buy two new "old-stock" motors as the price was too good to pass up!

Actually it amazes me some of the stuff you can get for free or close to it if you don't mind putting a little effort in to fixing somewhat minor problems! I bought one 20 inch push mower back in 1971 and probably gave away half a dozen over the years and right now have two that while not shiny new will start with one pull on the starter rope.

1400-ish pounds of mixed iron, $60. Not gonna get rich at that rate, but the pile under the maple tree looks MUCH better.
I have a somewhat smaller pile of assorted scrap, steel, electric wire (copper & aluminum) and other stuff. Just hope when I decide to haul it away for scrap I at least break even for the gas to get it there!

Hi Ken,
haul the aluminum & copper to the scrapyard because it sells for top dollar these days,
to the extent that new buildings don't get plumbed or wired until they can be secured from thieves.
Dispose of the steel by welding it into lawn art and displaying it for sale at your drive entry.
Even if some bastard steals the artwork, it ain't cluttering up your place any more.

I average a call to the scrappers about every other year, typically a LOADED truck and trailer goes away. They just haul it away and that's good enough for me. Where does it all COME from? Pretty sure I could do that right now and not miss any of it. I see about 15 scrap tires, if I'm lucky I'll only be paying $2 a tire after I load and haul to a place that'll take em..

I'm fortunate in that I have a scrap yard about 10 miles from here. If I had to haul it to the next nearest yard (70-ish miles) I wouldn't even make gas money. Cheaper to let it sit and return to Nature.

Re: Aluminum and copper: I got screwed. I had 80 pounds of clean aluminum and they paid me "irony aluminum" rate for it because A) they didn't believe me when I said it was clean aluminum and 2) they were too busy (or lazy...or both) to come look at it. I could have been a dick about it and made maybe an extra $5 but I just wanted to unload and un-ass the area.

I'm constantly getting brass from work. Fire sprinkler heads, valves, valve stems etc. I accumulate about 2- 5gal buckets then take it in. If it's closer to 2.5 buckets it can be close to $500 lately.

I've got a couple of 4" OS&Y valves that I need to tear into. Thinking about using some of it for foot pegs. The stems from those are about 1" diameter. But then someone will probably steal my pegs.
