I've been looking for a good platform to start a project bobber. I came accross a local listing and wondering if its a good deal? It's a 70 xs650, that has supposidly been in storage for years . Has 24K original miles and clean looking. He is asking $1,500.:yikes:

1500 is too much for a bobber project, period. you gotta tear the frame down anyways, might as well pay less for one that you can fix up yourself while you got everything apart. my $.02

It's clean and not too far from original (except the silly forks) - leave it alone for someone who wants to restore one. There are enough hack jobs and incomplete chops out there to pic up cheap and finish.

And before I get burned at the stake, I have no problem with chops, bobbers, I just figure that we need to save the odd clean, original bike so we remember what they looked like back in the day.

Early models like that don't make the best bobbers. The frames are weaker and most parts are more expensive. They're worth more stock.

The downside to most of those hackjobs is either

a) it's beyond saving and/or
b) they want all of the money they have into it back.

I would just be patient man and try to find another.

Do a restoration and a '70XS is worth about 6 to 7000 dollars. Buy this for $1500 and chop it and it's worth about $350. The XS you want is an 1980 to '84. The 1970 has different engine internals that are more difficult to deal with. Leave this one for an experienced XS fan.

Is this the general consensus?
