Differences in short block and I guess a standard block

Where can you find info on the different blocks
There is no "standard" block (that) your title is referencing. There's a short block and a long block.
A short block is an engine block that has the pistons, con rods and crank installed.
A long block has all that and the head(s) and valve train installed.
You can find that info here: https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/difference-between-long-and-short-blocks/#:~:text=Key Differences Between Long and,and typically the valvetrain installed.

Curious why you'd ask that question on this forum though? :umm:
It doesn't really pertain to the split case engines we're dealing with.

First major difference is with or without electric start, next is 256 or 447 series different rod length and small end size. There are other minor differences in some engine details but those are the major differences that affect universality of fit

Thanks for clearing that up was just curious when I heard that reference now I know

In the XS650 world there ARE short ROD and long ROD motors from the factory. So some caution is needed when building motors from parts. fortunately they were sold on different continents so they mostly don't get mixed together.
The three different motors are;
256 70-73 all markets,
553 long rod, europe,
and 447 short rod, North America. I think the SEAGCPS also got the 447,
Subject to revision as I'm riffing from (poor) memory.

Thanks I guess I asked it in the wrong way sorry to confuse some

The most likely snafu is not getting the correct piston for the three varieties of rods. Piston venders normally state the motor series somewhere in their description. There's a couple good ID threads, search 256 447 553 to find them.

Don't forget if you use a 256 crank with a 447 cam dont forget to change the sprocket or visa versa

That should clear thing up!
