    Rebuilt motor break-in opinions

No way to take side streets? General wisdom (from what I've read) is to avoid the steady RPMs of highway riding. I know it's 50 miles and it'd take a while, but if you gave yourself the time you could use that mileage to enact the break-in method of your choosing.

    Cozy Garage

For both lack of cash and common sense, I work out from under a network of tarps in the space between two houses. Between my roommate and I, we have seven bikes back there. I can work on at one at a time. Here in socal we get about a month of rain a year at most, and even during the rainy...

    Clutch Boss year exchangeability

So I'm working on an '82 xs with a stock clutch setup and found my clutch hub/boss was overtorqued at some point and needed replacing. A friendly forum member sold me one, but it's not the sort with the retaining wire clip nor machined groove for said wire. I'm guessing it came off a later...

Cannot shift - 'forked up' forks?

Well...don't laugh at me here...I can't tell if it's in there at all. I happen to have one in a drawer because when I bought the bike it came without the assembly (no bolt or spring - thanks PO!). I suppose I assumed it was in there this whole time because the detent that came with the used...

Cannot shift - 'forked up' forks?

I set out to adjust the claw just now and before I did ANYTHING, I went ahead and popped the neutral detent bolt out just to follow up on TwoManyXS1Bs' tip: Popped the bolt out and with the tension on that spring released the bike went through all it's gears perfectly. How is TwoMany such a...

Cannot shift - 'forked up' forks?

Yeah it was shifting smooth and great before and after the rebuild. Rode to and from work yesterday. This morning I rode out of my gate and it would only run in first and shift up to neutral and nothing higher. Tried turning the wheel and even riding it but it wouldn't engage 2nd. I'll...

Cannot shift - 'forked up' forks?

I can shift down to first but only back up to neutral. No higher gears. Just wanted to make sure I actually need to split the cases before I do. Everything externally checks out (springs, detent, shift claw, shaft bits, clutch, etc), so I'm pretty sure I need to pull the engine out, flip it...

    Siezed front mounting bolt

All interesting stuff. I'm really glad to know about other options to employ before the easyout...I didn't know it could go so wrong and I'm glad I'm reading about it rather than experiencing it :) Just to save face a little here...I don't believe it was my heavy hand that did the bolt busting...

    Siezed front mounting bolt

Fred - Wait... I use those! I get the set out every time I have to get at the sump filter because the 30-40 year old bolts that hold the plate almost always break in half during reassembly. I've learned my lesson and just toss the old bolts out to replace with new ones, but still - if it...
