I need a lesson in brakes 101. Why do the drum rear drum brakes on my 79 xs squeal like a pig? They stop great but heads turn. Would love to know what to look for before I disassemble. Thanks.
Thanks 5twins. You prefer the 1 piece over the 2? The line is a good place to start for sure and to be honest with you I hope it will make the difference I'm looking for. What is the best way to clean a MC?
I think its about time to improve the original front disc brake on my 79 xs 650 2f. I'm not looking for performance as much as practicality. Would love some advice from the learned minds of this site as where to start and is Mikes XS a good place for upgrade parts. Thanks
Oldbiker, looks like a great idea for one coil but I'm running two. I'm sure if I look at it enough and with input from this site a good resting spot will present itself. Thanks and enjoy your winter Down Under!
Fishing for ideas. I am mounting the green coils with the Pamco 277 kit on a '79 special that is stock. Before I do a lot of trial and errors, any tips? Thanks!
XSLeo, you sure have a way of explaining things simply. I was on the right track and now I know why. Thanks for your response. By the way, after following Hughs installation procedure, I will keep left and right coils and wires straight. Cheers!
Would like to tap the knowledge of this sight before I wire my pamco 277. Installation went perfectly with the help of Hughs guide. Just want to make sure I've got the wiring correct. The green wire goes to the green on the green coil. Black is ground. The red wires on the Pamco go to the...
I have never met you; but, I feel I know you for all the time you have devoted to this great motorcycling community. I also know that behind every good man there is a great woman. I am very sorry for your loss.
Thanks pwizl. I've rebuilt a few engines over the years and could not remember how much play was in the drum. The bike was beyond being ridden when it was given to me so have no idea how it shifted. Internally it does not look abused. You have also eased my mind on the pins. You would think the...
Finally got transmission dismantled to start ground up rebuild. I have 2 gear selector mechanism questions. My 3 gear selector forks seem awful sloppy on the gear selector drum. I can find no dimensions in my Haynes or Chilton manual. My drum is 1.402in and the forks around 1.448in. Is this...
I bought a shaft extender from Caswell and turned my Craftsman 8" bench grinder into a poor mans buffer. I work through black, red, white and blue with the proper wheels and end up with quite a nice piece. But it is dirty. I brave the weather and do it outdoors.
Sounds like another service you can offer Hugh. When I get around to the next crank I would like to rephase I might just throw in the overdrive. I am sure I can find a nest in that Priority box for it. Sorta kidding! Cheers.
An ordeal it is. If Mikes could just tell the purchaser the gear needs to be reamed to fit the shaft, one would know what to expect. I am happy with the fit now but will be a good while before I get to see the results as this is a budget controlled project. It is good to know I am not completely...
That is a good question. It's too late for this rebuild but I have two more I hope to get to and would certainly try some other product if available. It seems to be a desirable upgrade to this great motorcycle. Is there any stateside company that can manufacture this gear? One would hope so. I...
Thanks guys. Measured the outside of the old and new gear and they were within .001 so I just got back from having the new one machined to fit the shaft. Kind of between a rock and a hard place as you can't return the gear. This is the first problem I've had with Mikes XS, so I suppose I...
Just got mikes 5 th gear overdrive gear. I have a '79 SF and after all the research to make sure this gear fits, it doesn't. Has anyone had this gear machined to fit the shaft with success? I am concerned about everything meshing properly once installed in the cases. Any insight would be...
