Misfiring on takeoff in first and second gear

I just cleaned out the pilot jet and blasted the circuits with an air compressor. Still misfires in the same way. I have pod air filters and I went up to a 27 pilot jet. Maybe that too low still? But it only started doing this recently.

Misfiring on takeoff in first and second gear

So you're saying I should be shifting around 6-7k? My bike revs crazy loud after 3k. Feels like I'm over working it. If it wasn't getting enough fuel wouldn't it also misfire/sputter while in neutral?

Misfiring on takeoff in first and second gear

That sounds about right. I'm not sure of the exact rpm but it sound like it's happening around 1500-2500. I took it out today with my gopro to show what it sounds like.

Misfiring on takeoff in first and second gear

I've got 77 xs650 and it recently started acting sluggish and misfiring randomly. It only occurs during takeoff in first and second gear. After I get to third and up it's fine. I'm still new to this and don't really have a clue where to start. I've done some searching but couldn't manage to find...

    My 1977 has a vibration/over-reving problem

Ok so I took off another coil on the springs from mikesXS and it seemed to have helped a lot. The weights snap back into position now. It still quickly goes to full advance around 2500rpm but only while idling. I don't hear it going down the road anymore. So problem solved, I think?

    My 1977 has a vibration/over-reving problem

Well I got new springs and the weights snap back freely now but the bike was still advancing too early. So I did the trick of cutting off a hook and making a new hook on each spring to make them tighter. But the bike is still advancing too early. About 1500-2000rpm. And all at once too. I ran...

    My 1977 has a vibration/over-reving problem

It's making more sense now. I'll clean it out again and only grease that groove on each side and see how that helps. And I'll probably get some new springs anyway to eliminate that possibility.

    My 1977 has a vibration/over-reving problem

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. Today I carefully removed the advancing rod, cleaned it (it wasn't really dirty), put new grease on it, and carefully put it back in with the pins in the right orientation. Started it up but now it does the unusual revving at about 1500 rpm. So I...

    My 1977 has a vibration/over-reving problem

After looking at the ATU/centrifugal advance it indeed hangs up. Takes a bit of force to open it and it doesn't close all the way on it's own. My manual says to add a lightweight grease to the pivot pins but it doesn't say anything else. Do I have to disassemble it? And will that throw off my...

    My 1977 has a vibration/over-reving problem

I'll try re-syncing the carbs. Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't thought of that. I've kind of accepted the fact that these bikes vibrate a lot. I'm mostly worried about the over revving at about 2.5k rpm. It always use to get louder at a smooth rate. In the video you can hear it jump up in...

    My 1977 has a vibration/over-reving problem

I'm getting a high vibration and what I think is over-reving when my bike gets to around 2k-3k rpm. It started doing this last year as I was putting it away for the winter. It ran fine before that. I'm still kind of a noob at all this and I'm not sure where to start. Here's a video that shows...

White stuff building up on gas cap

cra-z1, thanks man. Yours looks amazing clean! I don't think mine has ever been cleaned in the past, lots of oil and dirt caked on. And I'm having electrical problems right now. :banghead: Anyway, thanks for the tip on Sipes! It's not even 2 mile from my house.:D

White stuff building up on gas cap

Sounds right to me! I'll have to look for some ethanol free gas stations. Thanks guys

White stuff building up on gas cap

Any one ever had this stuff build up on their gas cap? It wasn't there a month ago. Should I be worried about anything other than the cap it self rusting? Is it something to do with the fuel?

    Bike dies while idling

Okay guys, I'm loving my 77 650 as my first bike. I've done a few repairs and restored the carbs as well as re-jetted them after putting on some pod air filters. And now it runs great. But after about 20-40 minutes of riding I'll go to stop at a red light or a stop sign and it'll just die. I...

Anyone know where I can get a seat like this?

That one from counter balance looks pretty good. mseriously, were there a lot of modifications you had to do to get it to fit? I've never replaced a seat before but I hear you always have to do some creative work to get them to fit. I noticed there's two bolts toward the back of the seat. Did...

Anyone know where I can get a seat like this?

Does anyone know of a seat I could get that is similar to this one? This xs650 cafe style bike was made by Left Hand Cycles. They custom made the seat so I know I can't get one exactly like it but I really like the simplicity of it and the fact that it curves with the frame in the back...

My petcocks, rebuild or replace? Pics included.

They seem pretty solid to me. They didn't go anywhere when I tried to bend them. I guess ill clean them up good and see if there's any permanent damage under all this gunk.

My petcocks, rebuild or replace? Pics included.

So I just took apart my petcocks and they are in much worse condition than I thought they would be. I just bought the bike. I've never even seen pictures online of ones this bad. My question for you much more experienced guys is should I even bother cleaning and rebuilding them? They seem...

New rider, just got my endorsement.

Haha lol I know what you mean. I too really appreciate how good condition this bike is in. Don't worry though, I don't plan on cutting anything up. I want to simply make bolt on mods so that one day I could theoretically make it all stock again. But who knows, maybe someday before I start...
