    My 81' XS650 Chopper & Intro

It's pretty much finished. Finally got the rephase with deleted base gasket working. Have to use octane booster to make it run right. We are going to pull it apart again and put a new base gasket in so it will run on pump gas. I sold it to a good friend of mine after I got the rephase in...

    My 81' XS650 Chopper & Intro

Yeah, I put it in this build but I can't get it running right. Probably going to pull it out and put my old engine back in. I'm no mechanic.

    My 81' XS650 Chopper & Intro

Still can't get it to run right. Something is not right in there at all. Soon as it gets warmed up it starts to run real bad then dies. It looses power and I have to keep the RPM's up. But even with that it's bogging down. The timing with the light looks like it's right on the mark. I made a...

    My 81' XS650 Chopper & Intro

Finally got it running! But... I rode it for a bit and when it warms up it starts loosing power. Then I was getting a pinging or tapping sound like the valves were loose. Soon as I heard it I pulled the clutch in and the bike died. I went with no base gasket to get 10:1 compression. I'm...

    My 81' XS650 Chopper & Intro

I got real close to getting it to start today. After checking the instructions again five times I realized I set the left piston at TDC but I was using the pin on the right of the cam to put it at TDC. Wrong. Took the engine out again. Turned the cam again. Lined the mark on the left side to...

    My 81' XS650 Chopper & Intro

Doing research on the wiring now. Can't get any spark. I followed the HHB instructions and used the photo of the coil to figure out +/- but I don't think it matters. I unplugged the charging system and wired a battery up to make sure I'm getting power. Headlight/tail light work. Power to the...

Auto Advance Retainer Nut - early vs late model cam

Thanks. I just used a bigger hammer and made it fit. It won't be coming off easy that's for sure. LOL I'm so close to finishing I don't want that to stop me now. I should have this bike started by end of the day.

Took my two engines and build one that is rephased. Hope I don't need these because they won't fit with this early model crank shaft. I'm pretty sure they are only for the electric start.

Auto Advance Retainer Nut - early vs late model cam

I can't find anything about this. Two times already dealing with an early model bike 70-71 the new Auto Advance Retainer Nut from Mikes (70-84) doesn't screw on easy. It's like it has a different thread size. The last one I just used the old nut. I don't have an old one for my current build and...

    My 81' XS650 Chopper & Intro

About 200 miles in it was making a lot of noise but I was 200 miles from home at the time. I didn't realize what it was. When I got to Rachel I adjusted the valves. They were super loose. I had no idea what was going on. Didn't know until I tore it down again. But yeah, it was pretty bad. Ruined...

Yep... I'm going to go for it and put the rephase in my good engine. It's only money right. I'll make more and learning is expensive sometimes. Ordered the 256 cam chain. Will order the pistons soon from Hoos. 302957: JE 700 piston set, 22mm pins clips and rings for 70-72 700cc rephase try #2.

For Sale - Rephased crank and cam for XS1 256 engine. $500 shipped

Bump to top. For sale again. I'm not going to build my engine again. Going to put my stock engine in and just ride it.

17/30 or 18/32 sprockets? Replacing drive train.

New chain is like $30. I'm not sure if the old one will still fit. My bike is in no way stock.

17/30 or 18/32 sprockets? Replacing drive train.

I went with the 18/30 combo and love it since I have to ride down the freeway for 50 miles anytime I want to go into town. It's 70mph and they are raising it to 80mph now. Anyway, I tried it with the 17/30 once and didn't like it. Went back to the 18/30. I don't feel like it's slower off the...

    My 81' XS650 Chopper & Intro

Yep. $300 mistake. wiped out the pistons & rings, the cam lobes, bearings, rockers, and probably other. It would be more if I didn't have my original engine. That piston kit was $270. So... I might do it again with my old engine. I don't know yet. This is my only transportation and I'm 50 miles...

Yeah, 500 miles with no oil.

    My 81' XS650 Chopper & Intro

So... I screwed up and didn't put the gear in for my oil pump. That engine was short lived. I guess I'll be rephasing after all. Since I have to buy new pistons anyway. Another $400 and maybe I'll get it right this time.
