Ardcore stole money and now i'm out a hardtail

Same boat as you. I paid the balance on my frame back in early April. I waited and emailed a month and a half later. No response. Kept emailling and calling. Never ever a response. Finally in July I got an email from Jon saying my frame was marked as shipped on accident. Verbatim the same email...

    Valve Adjustment Tool

Thanks -- I have a locally owned hardware store down the street that has an exceptional stock of various nuts and bolts. I'll check on them before I look to order anything on the internet.

    Valve Adjustment Tool

Maybe I used the wrong terminology. The adjuster (threaded on the outside with the square head) is in fine shape. The locknut that threads on to the adjuster is what is rounded off. Can I use a nut from the hardware store?

    Valve Adjustment Tool

I got them adjusted using the method suggested here. Thanks so much. However, one of the loocknuts was rounded off pretty bad. I could not get a wrench on it. I had to use some vise-grips. I don't know how well you can tell from the fuzzy picture. Anyways, can I just grab another nut from the...

    Valve Adjustment Tool

Great. I'll give that a go. I haven't tried to set the valve clearances yet. I hated to spend a bunch of money on a tool that I really didn't need.

    Valve Adjustment Tool

I have been searching for a tool to adjust my valves with. I have a 79 XS6502F. I have read elsewhere that a 4mm open-end wrench will work. Can anyone confirm this before I buy a tappet adjustment set from MikesXS for $32 and pay $10 shipping?

    First build '79 Special

Thanks. I think I'll totally disassemble everything and get everything clean while I wait on the rebuiild kits. I've only ever bought spray carb cleaner. You know of anything I can just soak these parts in? I am going by the auto parts store today to see.

    First build '79 Special

I got the tank painted. For some reason the last coat cracked on me down by the mount nearest the seat. It isn't bad, and it is hardly noticeable. But that sucks. The rest of it turned out so perfectly. Oh well -- it was a $6 rattle-can paint job... I am back to working on the carbs. The carb...

    First build '79 Special

I think I have read every article in the tech section -- thank you. And I came across that PDF on here somewhere. I have read it a few times and have it saved for reference. I figured since I know I can get it running after I work on the carbs, I'd go ahead and get started repainting the...

    First build '79 Special

Hey all. Michael here from Memphis. I've posted an introductory thread here somewhere, and I finally just started working on this thing. I picked this up from a friend for free! It has been in his garage for about 5 years. This is how it looked in my friend's garage. Dirty, missing some parts...

    My 81' "Bratt" build

I am REALLY liking this build. I picked up my first XS a month or two ago. Right now I just want it running. But I haven't gotten a clear picture of how I want the finished product to turn out. However, this is nearly what I am thinking! Really nice. I can't wait to see it all together.

Yea thanks for the advice. Probably a better route. I have owned bikes and worked on them myself. I have been in and out of car motors my whole life, but never a bike motor. Anyways, new battery, valve adjustment, cam chain adjustment, and some tinkering. Turns over smoothly but the petcocks...

    Let's See The XS's

The guy I got it from said he thought it was stock but wasn't sure. I have no idea. I can tell you it is uncomfortable as hell!

    Let's See The XS's

Here is mine. All stock 1979. I am going to leave it mostly stock with a few added customizations. Nothing major. Different lights, seat, maybe a tank.

    New ignition switch

Okay -- I know. This isn't so pretty. But, this bike didn't have a key, and the ignition switch was fuubarred. So, this was all I could come up with in my toolbox. It'll work until I find a more permanent solution!

I pulled the tank and cleaned it out really well. Surprisingly not any rust really. I pulled the carbs and cleaned them out as well. I went ahead and changed the oil, have the petcocks soaking in penetrating oil over night. One was frozen up. But I can turn the crank over smoothly with a socket...

I just got the bike home. It's a little rough around the edges. Some cables are missing. No tail lights. But, all in all, she is in fairly decent shape. I am about to start pulling it all apart. Not even going to try and start it!
