    Selecting gears without the engine running

    This might seem a really stupid question but it's been a looooonnnng time since I ran the bike and went through the gears. I wondered. Should I be able to click through all the gears while the bike is stationary / not running? I have a vague recollection of being able to before I started...

    A prudent question before getting a big hammer out...

    rebuilding the engine on my 73 SE (project http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12980) and installed the gear selector shaft last night (on UK time here). The tangs of the sprung arm are not equidistant from the 'star', so the manual recommends adjusting it using the eccentric adjuster...
