Just built myself an engine stand, now time to start stripping the engine.
I could do with a bit of information.
The engine number is 3L1001479. Does anyone know which year/model this is and what type XS engine?
Also, when I get to stripping the engine how do I tell if it needs a rebore? Can I tell just by inspection and by measuring the bore at 3 or 4 points.
I am allright with most of the engine top end stuff but I have never changed pistons or rings or had a rebore done.
Any information will be gratefully recieved.

Tim.

If you look through the SX650 tech section you will find a chart that will tell you the 3L1 001479 is a 79 XS650SF Euroean model. Probably has the 533 engine. The 533 is about the same engine as the 447 engine but with longer rods and shorter pistons.
Your repair manual tells how to measure the cylinders and pistons to determine clearances.
If no manual, get one. It will be the most important tool you will ever own.
Biker.net has them to down load.
Over at The Garage Look under General Discussions, General Boards. The first few stickied threads are links to download all the factory repair manuals from 70 to 84.
