5th gear Overdrive?

So how come it isnt available for pre 78 models?

It is but you have to change 5th on both gear sets. I bought a newer transmission on ebay for around $45 before I split the cases only to find out that my 78 already had the newer style in it.

Ok so if I understand you correctly, all post 78 5th gears will fit into my 76 trans, and then I can buy the 5th gear overdrive?

Dont take it for fact I saw it on a thread here and took a chance.

Just looked on mikesxs and they claim the od only fits the later transmission, but they say you should buy both. I only bought the one and have had no problems, put it in in an afternoon. I would still chance it on a $45 later transmission set in your 76

So what it is that you see visually different between the later gear and 78 and earlier when you have them laying side by side?

As described on the MikesXS product page there's a machine mark on the teeth of the later year cog that identifies it.
