70-79 vs 80-84 Alternator Rotor?

Is there a difference between the charging rotors on a 78 vs 82?

I've got the 78, the motor I'm pulling from has the 82, but I want to avoid buying a new regulator.

Will it work?

they are diffrant i know a 78 wont work on a 82 i think 82 will work 78

the 82 had a magnet embedded to act as the the TCI sensor timing trigger, the 78 rotor won't fire the plugs... no magnet

yes, the 82 rotor will work on the 78 bike.

This is just the rotor, not the cover. I know the covers are different.

yes, the 82 rotor will work on the 78 bike. The part that bolts on over the rotor is called the stator.

Got an answer...sorta

"The 80 up bikes use the TCI ignition. This ignition uses a magnet in the rotor and a set of pickups on the stator.
The 79 and older used points. The rotor won't have the magnet and the stator won't have a place to mount the pickups."
