In the process of getting the details together on my XS650 project. The parts vary to just about every year, but the Engine itself is from a 1973.

I was looking at the AGM batteries on the MikesXS site and noticed they have one for 72-73, and one for 74-84. The obvious answer seems to be to order the 1972-73 battery for my 1973 engine, but I'm wondering why? The difference seems to be 12AH vs 14AH. Is there any harm in using the higher AH on the 73 engine or any benefit.

thanks.

LikeBikes,

It's the physical size of the battery that is different. I don't think that the 14AH will fit in your battery box.

YB12A-A (Sealed)
12N12A-4A-1 (Conventional)
5.3125" x 3.1875" x 6.3125"

YTX14AHL-BS (Sealed)
YB14L-A2 (Conventional)
5.3125" x 3.5" x 6.5625"

Go to the Yuasa site and research your bike vs later models.

thanks. That site helped a lot. The physical size seems to be the only relevant difference.
Only the engine is '73 though. The frame is a hard-tailed '75, so it may not matter too much for me.

With a hard tail you can use any size battery, just build the box to fit. The battery should be the 14amp/hour size or larger if you want the electric starter to work.
