As many of you know, I have the mystery 72 that is really a 74... Anyway it has a tree marked with a 447 number and it has 34mm forks with extended forks total length 37 inches.
Here is my new dilemma.
I am at the point of swapping out the front forks to be stock and get lower. I removed the existing long toms and tried to install a nice set of stock 74 forks acquired on Ebay.
They fit into the tree just fine and the caliper bolted right up to the lowers. Then the trouble began.
While fitting the wheel into place, and inserting the axle, I found that the axle would not go thru the opposite hole in the fork after going all the way thru the hub due to it being off center about 3/4". Hmm I thought, research time.
I measured the "new" fork from the center of the axle hole to the center of the bottom bolt on the caliper and got around 2 3/4".
I went back to the "old" fork and measured around 3 1/2" on the same axle to bolt. There is the 3/4" I was looking for.
Now my fix is to swap out the tubes and use the original lowers...
Live and learn.
