I'd like to eliminate the key by modding the lock somehow, or replace the cap with something that is a direct replacement and only has a flip lock or something like that. Anyone done either?

It is pretty easy to remove the lock, disassemble it, remove the tumblers, and reassemble. Then any key or a screwdriver, etc., will operate the lock.
