'81 motor wont fire but turns over - any help in Eastern NC?

I'm not sure which manual you have. Most have a list of bike specs, these list include engine specs, such as compression.
In my Clymers book starting on page 153 it lists most of the bikes specs and it says 145 psi. Thats a minimum for a new engine, most report 150+ on a fresh rebuild. My 750 kit has about 195 psi.
If your bike hasn't run in a few years even if your compression reads lower, it may be ok. As long as it reads above about 100 psi and within 10% between sides. You should be able to get it to run.
There are reports of lower psi readings improving after the bike runs awhile. Many come up to the 150 psi range after a few hundred miles of running.
