82 XS650 Starts then dies

So update on this. The Tachometer now shows 500rpms with the engine off. When the bike is running there is no change on the tachometer. I feel a though I need to disassemble the tachometer and see what broke.

Probably the spring, unfortunately that's common. I don't think you can fix that if it is the issue so a replacement unit may be your only option.
