Adjusting nut on top of forks ????

Hey guys. My 80 has a flathead screw on top of the forks and from what I've read these are for adjusting the forks. How ? The info isn't in my manuals and I cant find any here. Turning them which way does what ? How much of a difference do they make ? Thanks in advance for any info given.

those are preload adjusters. push down and turn clockwise into the notch increases the preload. I believe there are 3 settings. try them out on each setting to see how you prefer them.
