Ok, first post, been stalking a while. Anyway i aquired two 1980 650's a while back. One running and one in parts ( apperantly it runs as well). I went to do kind of a quick go over on the runner today and both the secondary oil filter and the main sump filter are full of crap. ( metal shavings, plastic, and some stringy grey crap?) even the plugs had grey stuff caked on? The main sump filter really isnt that bad, it may be kinda new except the gasket which is screwed. Anyway any ideas on my next step? Dont really want to do a complete overhaul. This bike was supposed to be my interm bike until my other bikes are finished. ( spring really snuck up on me!) I know i should take it down and flush it etc but I really dont want to, thats four bikes sitting around needing work. Their both fairly low milage, but from what i gathered and the amount of effort i had to put in to drianing the oil the previous owner wasn't very maintnance savvy.
my main reason for finally joining the forum was after reading a thread on Tig welding vs mig and stick etc. and reading the responses. Ive been a welder - fabricator ( mining, oilrigs, compression , heliox submersed) for 15 years. My tig died on me about four years ago and I have done about half dozen frames with stick. ( even after the Tig was fixed). I have never once had someone notice the difference. Anyway, this site seems to have a TON of combined knowledge and know how concerning these bikes.
My second reason for joining was a thread about Harley guys and Harley forums -- I have and love a couple old Harleys, but man I HATE Harley people - you know the ones! i have a 1990 softail that i hardtailed , puts out 120 horse, very cool machine. I had a "real biker" tell me last week that my new " nightrain"? was a girls bike. I kindly pointed out to him the my bike is 21 years older then the supposed bike he was talking about. I dont see how you can confuse a bike made in the 90's with a new nightrain. he did have a big Harley jacket though so he must know better!
Anyway, any help with the 650 would be appreciated , great site . Thanks
IAN

BC-IAN;

Welcome to the site...................you have come to the right place. The guys and gals love their XS650's but a few also own Harleys.

This link is from our "Tech" section, found at top of page. It should guide you. The "Search" function works very well................give it a try.

First step might be to clean debris from the filters (strainers actually), change the oil and then do a compression test.

Black plastic in the sump strainer, is from the camchain front guide. Its old and is falling apart.

Enjoy your XS650's.

Ya, I did do alot of searching lately, and I know the plastic is from the guide but is simply cleaning the filters and changing the oil gonna be enough? Compression is good, and in the short time I ran it to warm it up it ran good. Fired up first try, very little smoke. Guess I could change the oil a couple times, every 100 miles or so for a bit? Thanks

We can't say for sure. but I would clean the screens and run it, a recheck of the side screen is easy enough. what do you have to to loose? Was the sump screen torn yet? After opening 6 or 7 sumps so far I am still hoping to find my first non torn sump screen some day.

i cleaned mine when i got it, full of plastic and shavings. pulled it again over the weekend after many miles (all last year) and they're clean.. so clean them and try it

gary, my screen is not torn! i should take a photo for you. you can frame it

My screens not torn, actually looks pretty good, aside from the shit stuck to it. But there is only 12000 miles on it. ( or so I'm told!)

question... I just got my first xs, went to do an oil change and also found a ton of plastic and shavings in the filters... the bike as 12,000miles (supposedly), everything on the outside looks clean, no oil or gas leaks, good compression, starts up and runs fine right away... anyway, I'm wondering if I can just put new filters, oil and gaskets in and be safe; or do I need to do a rebuild and replace the cam chain guide?

Chewed up guides are not unusual. I have a feeling a lot of owners have overtightened the cam chain inadvertently. That puts too much pressure on the guide and the chain grinds into it even if the bike has low miles. What can we say? Your bike, your call. We have heard both it ran fine for years and broken cam chain stories.

gggGary - Thanks for the advice. I just ordered some new oil filters and gaskets. So I guess I'll have till they get in to decide what I'm going to do. I really appreciate the help, and I'm loving this site so far!

BC-IAN, Welcome to the site. FYI, I, too have 3 Harley's. But also a 650. I like just about all motorcycle's, and I will wave to who ever wave's to me on the road. Yea, I know about them asshole's who think an old Ironhead is a 'girls' bike, until I blow 'em off the road with it. It's quick, nimble, and loud as hell. I am sort of a connifer, that is I like to ride as much as I can. But, lately, the asshalf's in the cage's are what scares me. Ok, Ok enough whinin'. You will like the simplicity and relative ease of working on the 650. And once you get used to a totally different kind of Vibe, not so bad as a rider. My 650 is mostly stock, with a few up grade modification's. I went through it front to rear, top to bottem, and it's all in very good working condition now. I would trust it to go anywhere now.
That is a normal thing on these bike's, because they have been sitting around for so long, the front cam guide's fall apart. If your so inclined, removal of the head to replace it is not all that tough. But, you might as well freshen it all up, as the head has to come off to do the guide. Me, I would not worry about it for now. As you saw, the oil wasn't bad after changing it the first time. And yes, I DO remember the horror I first felt when mine showed up with all that crap, and my sump screen was torn!
BTW, An '01 Heritage, A '09 Road King, and a 79 (bastard year?) Ironhead. '80 G model 650.

Yes, I would ride the bike the rest of this season and maybe even next year. Just change the oil frequently, like every 1000 miles, and clean the filters at each oil change. What you found is probably an accumulation of debris because the P.O.s didn't clean the filters as much as they should have (every oil change). It took literally thousands of miles and many oil changes to flush all the junk out of mine. The filters are finally coming out clean now.

Speaking of filters, don't throw that torn one away, repair it and use as a spare. I have spare clean filters on the shelf that I swap in at the oil change. Then I can clean the dirty ones at my leisure and have them ready to swap in at the next oil change .....

I've now seen 8-10 and have yet to see even a single one not torn....Blue

Welcome to the site man! I also have a savage hatred for harley guys but am constantly on the lookout for a 60's sportster. Also any douchbag who calls a sportster a girls bike doesnt know his history and should shut the fuck up.

twins...

Since it's germane to the topic, what is your preferred method of cleaning filters? I'm sure there are a few, but I was wondering what seems to be favored.

And are your patches/reinforcements just JB-Weld, or is there something else behind it?

TC

My patches are just JBWeld. The screen behind it makes a nice backing and so far, all have held up fine. I clean my filters in a kerosene bath, then lightly blow dry, then lightly oil and store in a plastic bag until used. The metal top and bottom on the originals is just raw steel and will surface rust if not oiled.

I do much the same as 5twins, though I do cut a 2" to 3" strip off a thin gauge smoked oyster can lid to a little less than the width of the opening between the two halves of the strainer (to cover the torn section). Fold about a 1/8" end piece to a right angle to fit it a wire mesh fold on each end. Bend fit to conform and JB Weld seal in place between the halves to act as a shield in addition to the JB epoxy itself. Works great!
and I happen to like the smoked oysters too.

Ah, thank you. Kerosene is what I had read about most often. But the light oiling is good to know... not sure I'd have thought to do that. I might still have my original one somewhere. And I might have to use a smoked sardine can. (Gotta try smoked oysters! :) )

I'm running a mike's replacement at present. I have not likely yet ridden my bike over about several hundred miles (literally) since getting her running in August '07, but I reckon I have changed the oil no less than five times during all the idling, tuning, short shakedown junkets, diagnostics sessions, etc.. :p Not kidding. :) Trying to change that. :)

dont get the king oscars!!! get the s&w's in cottonseed oil. the kings seem gritty! Ive been a conisuiereererseae of delectible seafoods since I was a wee lad. Smoked oysters give me a chub just seeing them on the shelf at the store.
oh yeah, I just use brake cleaner on my filters, and let them dry for a while. is ok?

Blue, are you part Goat? Eatin' all them there oyster's is better than Viagra!

What do you mean by "part goat" Gordon? I'm all in on goatness! Approaching Guru Status.
