Ok, first post, been stalking a while. Anyway i aquired two 1980 650's a while back. One running and one in parts ( apperantly it runs as well). I went to do kind of a quick go over on the runner today and both the secondary oil filter and the main sump filter are full of crap. ( metal shavings, plastic, and some stringy grey crap?) even the plugs had grey stuff caked on? The main sump filter really isnt that bad, it may be kinda new except the gasket which is screwed. Anyway any ideas on my next step? Dont really want to do a complete overhaul. This bike was supposed to be my interm bike until my other bikes are finished. ( spring really snuck up on me!) I know i should take it down and flush it etc but I really dont want to, thats four bikes sitting around needing work. Their both fairly low milage, but from what i gathered and the amount of effort i had to put in to drianing the oil the previous owner wasn't very maintnance savvy.
my main reason for finally joining the forum was after reading a thread on Tig welding vs mig and stick etc. and reading the responses. Ive been a welder - fabricator ( mining, oilrigs, compression , heliox submersed) for 15 years. My tig died on me about four years ago and I have done about half dozen frames with stick. ( even after the Tig was fixed). I have never once had someone notice the difference. Anyway, this site seems to have a TON of combined knowledge and know how concerning these bikes.
My second reason for joining was a thread about Harley guys and Harley forums -- I have and love a couple old Harleys, but man I HATE Harley people - you know the ones! i have a 1990 softail that i hardtailed , puts out 120 horse, very cool machine. I had a "real biker" tell me last week that my new " nightrain"? was a girls bike. I kindly pointed out to him the my bike is 21 years older then the supposed bike he was talking about. I dont see how you can confuse a bike made in the 90's with a new nightrain. he did have a big Harley jacket though so he must know better!
Anyway, any help with the 650 would be appreciated , great site . Thanks
