wd-40, spray on wipe off. I did it to an entire rockcrawling buggy chassis and left it about a month or so before before painting it and it worked great.
Just for any future search's anyone may have I will give a final update..
The tank came out really nice (BIT TO NICE FOR A RAT BIKE ) and was very easy to get to a nice look by giving a final rub down with 800 grit and some WD-40.. Only about 20 mins work if that..
So the process I used was.. Use paint stripper to remove as much paint as you can I did two coatings and make sure to get in all the little areas.. After this start to rub down with a coarse sand paper I used I think 340 grit.. This will take about an hour or two but stick at it..
I then sprayed WD-40 on the tank and rubbed down with 800 grit and this is what you come up with..
Total time was about 3hours work, I should also say that the recess on the underside of the tank was repainted black, Just mask off where the weld starts and away you go...
You are the second person I have heard speak of this!? Where can we find it? I have been using wd40 for the last year. Works good never got it wet tho.
