I picked up this 81ish special 2 bike in a box a few weeks ago.

Totally complete minus the front and rear wheel.

Came with a dual disc set up (I believe off an xs750??)

I would like to run the 18/19 spike wheels and was hoping someone more intelligent than myself may have a quick answer as to what year(s) of rims/hubs I should be tracking down.

I tried searching the archives a left a little more confused haha it was info overload.

That left side is easy bolt on. It does look nice. As my usual response to this idea, I recommend the 5mm thick rotors which came on SR500's , XS1100's, and even a few other Yamaha models. The disc offset is compatible with the XS calipers and hangers.

To any 19” front hub/rim?
I believe all the front hubs have the same dimensions. I've only had 75 and up in my possession

You are only considering the 35mm fork (77 up) correct?

This was my own first double disc add on years ago. Had 7mm thick XS rotors and still the original rubber brake lines and the improvement was felt immediately.

That I didn’t think about and didn’t think forks would make a difference. I am not super versed in all the differences of the XS.

I’ve got 35mm forks.

I should be hunting for a 77+ front hub and wheel?

Choose a 75 era.. the disc mounting holes have steel inserted threads and don't show the "thru hole" that the 77 up aluminum threaded hubs have. I believe the 77 and up were cheapened up for manufacturing cost savings.

Got it!!!

thanks for the help!! Really appreciate it.

bike looks great!!!

this is the first XSI had years ago that had a dual disc. I believe it had a front end swap as the fork ears were a different color.

I was like 17 when I bought it and it was set up like that when I got it.

All front 36 spoke hubs from 73 -81 will carry the 35 mm fork rotors, (from 77-81 US and to 83 in Canada,), rotors and all these hubs have provision for twin disks........

The early 73 to 76 rotors and later 77-81 rotors are interchangeable with all 36 spoke front wheel hubs from 73-81. .........82 and 83 front hubs have 48 Spokes, the previous sentence still stands...........

Also looks like one of those rotors, (black paint around the holes), is from an XS750 which is 265mm,the same as the rear rotors on the 78SE/79SF/80SG Specials.
This is smaller than the 77-81 front rotor. The second rotor with the paint missing around the holes looks like it is the 300mm rotor from 77-81

Rotors are both the exact same size, just a funny angle of the photo. One has the offset facing up and the other down.

I very much appreciate the help and info!!

'73, '80 and '81 wheels will have chrome steel rims. If you want the flanged alloy type, you'll need a '74-'79 wheel.

5T - thank you!!!

I do have a front rim that is a chrome flangless but am just not into it.

the search is on for a flanged rim and hubs, if anyone is holding let me know.

I won’t be getting to this bike for at least a few months. Still finishing up my cb500t buggy
