curious as to what would cause the bike to only start if throttle is applied while coming down on the kick start. if i kick it with no throttle it will eventually after 10-20 kicks sound like its getting close to wanting to start. give it some gas durring the kick over and it fires over on 1 kick and idles fine.

marvin, others may know better or say I'm dead wrong, but I'll hazard a guess:

My '73 is the same way, even hot. I think that it's less about giving the bike fuel than giving it air to aid in fuel draw/ignition; what you're doing when you crack the throttle a tad is opening the plates just a hair. That air supply may assist fuel in getting pulled into the combustion chambers by vacuum, and getting that fuel charge lit by the spark thereafter.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :)

Why worry crack the throttle and be happy it starts. I don't know why it must start with a closed throttle, what ever works as long as it works. I had a '79 that was thesame way.
