Brake Disc Shim

Can anyone help clear up my confusion regarding the need/requirement for a shim behind the disc brake pads.
The partial Yamaha maintenance mail I have shows a shim, however, the major public maintenance manuals show no such shim (see below.)

The shims were something Yamaha added on later models to help ward off brake squeal. If your brakes don't then no need for the shims. Mine were fine with stock pads but when I changed to aftermarket pads, they squealed. So, I put the shims in and that fixed it. Unfortunately, you can't buy the shims. I scrounged mine from newer parts calipers.
