Cafe build update

Rude; that exhaust (whole bike) looks great to me. Mind my asking what parts you used to set up the pipes? I see what appears to be about a 25 degree bend before the mufflers?

thanks, I took a guess at the bend for the headers to mufflers, seems to work. For rego I do need reflectors which will go onto the number plate and sides as for the rear gaurd if the trail bikes I see getting rego'd are anything to go by then I should be right, if not I have a plastic gaurd under the seat hump that I can extend.
The riding position is good, agreed I wouldn't want to go much higher in the rearsets position.
cheers

The headers are MikeXS 1 3/4" stainless headers (with the torque inserts), the headers are excellent quality and finish

I had the bends made locally using a cardboard template and a best guess, I couldn't get the bike to the shop.
The mufflers are the 17" reverse cone "shorties" that I picked up from Trojan Classics http://www.trojanclassics.com/ over here in Oz, they do some good stuff.
And yes the pipes are loud (much like a HD with drag pipes), I'll be baffling them down for rego.

just got the paint work back, seat and tank, the "chrome" paint looks like rattle can with gloss over it, also shows up every imperfection in the prep work, so if anyone is thinking of going with any of the "chrome" paint, think again is my recommendation.

Luckily the bloke that sparayed it is not impressed either, he has offered to re do it for free, but not in the chrome stuff, I'm keen on keeping the go fast stripes, now I just need to pick a colour..................

cheers

Nicely done. If you are going the rattle can route - pick a duplicor touch up and clear with Spraymax. I've done three bikes this way and they all came out super stunning.

You pulled off the monochrome look very well, smacks of hammered alloy 60's British cafe, well done.

FWIW I think a less than chrome look to the paint finish is going to be better than "chrome" You might even consider a rub out with coarse compound to give it a slight satin finish. Especially before you strip, repaint it.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated, the mobile phone pics don't show the problems with the paint, but thats not relevant now as the tank and tail are now back with the painter, he didn't want his name against a less than perfect job (you don't hear that often nowadays) so he came and got it yesterday, he's also following up with the paint manufacturer, House of Kolor, to see where we went wrong.
The main problem is that it went down unevenly giving a "cloudy" uneven effect to the silver, this didn't show until the clear coats went on. Also the slightest imperfection in the prep work really show up
Watch this space for the next iteration, and I will pull together some better pics when I'm finished, whenever that is:confused:
Oz, thanks for the shocks they look good and give a better ride height

Rude, that bike is a beauty! If I wasnt already 90% finished with My Tracker......How about silver frame with British Racing Green tank and fenders? Some Gold pinstriping?

pyroman, got some pics of the tracker, I nearly went in that direction but wanted a trad cafe
Thats dark green and gold is a traditional theme which would look great (and it's our national colours!)................but, decision made already with the help of the "minister for finance" lets just say it's going to a brighter colour, I change my mind every day but had to commit
once I get the colour scheme right I'll be pulling it down to paint the frame and detail the donk, I think silver frames look great and finish off the whole bike.
cheers

thanks, i'm looking for a length that will keep the center stand functional while getting the rear end up and the 13" seem about right.

its a shame the paint didn't work out, that was a sharp look. otherwise the bike looks great, nice to see other people building cafe style. looking foward to seeing the new paint.

I did have a set of chinese gas shocks as can be seen on previous pics they sat lower but the centre stand still worked, just needed to lift the back of the bike to get it up there. I've got a CB900 Honda that I've put lower shocks on (yes also chinese but double action ones), what a heavy lump that bike is, I need a house brick under the rear wheel to get it onto the centre stand, still needs a fair bit of grunt, luckily the XS is light in comparison.
cheers

repaint is finished, and what a nice job he did, looks like glass (anyone in Canberra region need a good painter drop me a line). Now just getting it ready for rego inspection so I've filled the shorties with stainless scourers and built baffles that brings the noise level down to "acceptable" (I wonder if there is an Iphone app for a db meter so I can check it?) I also fitted a rear gaurd extension for inspection cause the numpties go stupid if you don't have the back wheel covered.
cheers

Looks great bud. I'll be starting work on my XS650B in about a month, and I'll be using this as some inspiration. Exhaust and Rear sets are perfect.
