Nearly all vehicles were shipped to South africa and assembled there this was due to the fact you can ship more in parts than you can in a whole, and seemed to get round the massive import tax on bringing in a complete car or bike. As they were put together in kit form some parts where mated to others to a customers requests/ needs and budget. It also meant some very clever engineers gained experiance as they where building from the ground up with an intermate knowledge of the product they where selling. Even Porsche did this to avoid the tax!!
To that point, my South African motorcyclist friend told me that during the pre-war era, British bikes were brought in without tires or batteries. Those had to be supplied/manufactured locally in Africa in order to get around the rules.
