Cap collar removal.

Hi,
I am using the tank from a mid 70's XS650 on my raodster project.
Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the collar that carries the fuel tank cap.
I have removed the filler cap itself and the collar looks to be pressed onto the neck of the fuel tank.
I want to paint the tank and was wondering if it was possible to remove the collar.

On my 78SE the tank collar is spot welded to the tank, so it don't come out.

Perhaps yours is different?

I will scrape 25 years of crud off and have a good look in the morning.
If the spots are small I may grind them off to paint the tank then tack it back on.
